weird noise from engine

there's a popping/cracking/snapping/ noise coming from my engine only when i accelerate, im afraid its something major, hoping its just a spark plug, slightly hopefully its just a spark plug wire but not really.... anyways, it only happens when i press on the gas. my accerlerating is slow, and the engine is a lower tune than it normally is. what is the problem?

Re: weird noise from engine

Sounds like it's mis-firing. Might just be a belt. Inspect the belts and have a friend rev it while you look in the engine bay to see if you can pinpoint the noise.

Is the check engine light on? Regardless of whether it's on or not take it to Autozone and have the codes read (it's free) and post any codes.

no the cel isnt on, it just takes a while to pick up and the rev itself sounds... i texted the mechanic that fixed my car up and he said it might be the spark plugs or the spark plug wire (hoping its just a spark plug), timing belt i know im gonna change it, and after i got my O2 sensor (downstream) switched out, the mechanic said i had approx. 100k on my belt (how he knows.... i have no clue). but i planned on going up to advanced auto parts in the morning to find out what could cause this, and if it is a belt i planned on getting a HKS timing belt and having it changed out (i wish i can fix it myself i just dont wanna mess it up and cause MORE damage than shes already in). but ill put up the codes when i can.... one of these days im gonna get myself a computer so i can find out myself... lol

Re: weird noise from engine

I went to advanced auto parts store, they did a visual check, and said the spark plug wires are ok, timing belt should be ok, but the fuel filter hasn't been changed in A LONG TIME, so I got a new fuel filter and got seafoam (engine cleaning stuff). So hopefully this helps out... They didn't do a test on it plus they were busy...

the engine light JUST came on and they said it was the MAP sensor (crap...), but anyways, i filled up the car and put seafoam cleaner in it so it should clean the inside of the engine... as for the MAP sensor, do you know about how long it will be till ill NEED to change it? (they reset it by the way)

Re: weird noise from engine

MAP sensor would definitely cause a mis-fire, which I'm thinking you have. Mis-fires are no god and can damage your engine rather quickly. Recommend replacing the MAP sensor ASAP.

Re: weird noise from engine

Naw, it's not hard at all. It's on the intake manifold. 3 wire connector.
