water pump

So I'm learning that the water pump on my friends 97 ex is behind the timing belt. We think it is starting to go out. I have no idea how to replace it. I have a fsm but it is missing that section (the fsm was downloaded). How do I change it? Do I have to remove the timing belt? Its not overheating yet but the temp is getting above normal. Its not the thermostat but I am gonna replace that soon just to be safe. The only experience I have with honda water pumps was on a 77 accord. Any help is appreciated

Re: water pump

Why do you think it's the water pump? is it overheating? If it is, read this first: https://www.civicforums.com/forums/3...reference.html

If you change the water pump you need to change the timing belt also as the labor overlaps a lot. You'll definitely need the crank holder tool and a big breaker bar and a big *** cheater pipe to take the crank pulley bolt off. Or a 1" drive impact will do it most of the time. If it's overheating 'cause of a bad headgasket then you need to change the timing belt and water pump anyways as you have to get the timing belt off to change the headgasket.

You have a PM.

Re: water pump

I run toyota 1st gen 4runners so im going by experience with them. When they over heat its normally the water pump (they have a weep hole to let you know their bad). or its the thermostat. For me this is a guessing game. I dont wanna touch the timing belt if I dont have to since a shop just replaced it 5 months ago but they didn't do the water pump. I just want to know how to do it just in case

Re: water pump

Not too often you hear of water pump failure on this thread but it does come by from time to time... read the above thread like others have said. Tons of good info in there.

Re: water pump

Thanks for all the help. I'm gonna replace the thermostat today and go from there. if I do gotta change the water pump I think I'll change the head gasket since I'll be that far into it anyway.

Re: water pump

People tend to opt for the cheapest maintenance possible, so although the car has probably had at least 2 timing belts I wouldn't be surprised if it were the original water pump.
