Newbie with a question 1999 civic EX
Sorry for the newbie question but i picked up a 1999 EX auto (95K miles) and while i was doing general maintanence i noticed that the IAC valve does not have a cable running to it?
shouldnt there be a cable there? how else would the ECM know how to adjust idle? my idle is a little strange in that it starts out high from a cold start (above 1K) and progressively gets lower and lower as the engine warms up
your thougts?

Re: Newbie with a question 1999 civic EX
the iac valve is electronically controlled via the computer, it varies voltage to it and moves the valve via a linear actuator. Poor idle can be caused by excess carbon buildup in the iac valve over time that stops the free movement of that actuator, cleaning it will remedy that. It is also a good idea to do a full tune up once you have the car if you have no idea about the maintenance of it over the years so you have a fresh start and eliminate about 70% of all common issues with a recently purchased car. By a full tune up I mean;
1) New rotor
2) New cap
3) new plug wires
4) new plugs
5) new fuel filter
6) new air filter
7) fuel injection cleaner.
8) oil change if you have no idea when it was done last.

Re: Newbie with a question 1999 civic EX
thank you for your response. i am in the middle of doing just that as far as maintenance and thats when i noticed the IAC did not have a cable running to it. I did remove and clean out the IAC but do not have a cable anywhere to plug back in?
i am assuming the cable is part of the engine bay wiring harness and now i wonder if the previous owner cut that cable out?(why i do not know)?

Re: Newbie with a question 1999 civic EX
if you follow the wiring for the throttlebody it has to be there somewhere unless it is like you said that they cut it off. Sometimes previous owners do bonehead things, I have seen that a lot in friends cars and from purchasing a few of my own. They range from the simple to the more amazingly stupid things.
