Question amplifier broken?

I was driving last night, when all of a sudden I didnt hear the "boom" from my sub. It seems the amp for my subwoofer broke? My other amp for my highs work fine, but the amp for my sub doesnt even turn on. Music will play and my other amp will turn on, but the amp for my sub doesnt. I looked at the fuse and saw it was blown. I bought 4 new fuses to put in, but every time I put in the fuse it would blow. I was talking to a co-worker of mine, and he said that my amp was grounded, and probably have to get a new one. Just wondering, if anyone would know what would be the cause of my amp getting grounded? Also, would I be better off just getting a new amp? or getting it fixed?

I'd retrace all of your wores, It seems the power line like your co-worker says seems to be toughing metal in teh car somewhere. just try retrace all the wires and see if the wire is contacting the car anywhere.

The plastic fuses in the amp would blow? If that's the case disconnect the speakers leads just to be sure and try another fuse, if it blows something in the amp is shorted out and you will have to get it serviced. If its an inline fuse on the power wire to that amp that you are talking about, check your connections, it could just be a short in the wiring or at the connections. If it is the amp, the decision to get it fixed or buy a new one should be based on what kind of amp it is and how much you paid for it, as well as how long are you willing to be without it. If it were a $100 bazooka amp i would just buy a new one, if it were a $900 xtant, i would probably get it fixed....

well its just an amp for my sub, not for my high speakers. The fuse for the amp connected to the sub will blow as soon as I turn on my head unit. I doubt its the wiring since my other amp is working for my highs. I checked the fuse at my battery, and everything seems ok. Im not sure how my amp would just "break" all of a sudden. I've only been using it for about 3-5 months. Im just trying to figure what caused it, so perhaps in the future I can prevent it. Maybe its the generic wires I got? But they all seem to be intact. Or could it be my cheap 60$ profile california amp I got for my sub? Im not sure.

Most likely it's the fact that it's a cheap amp. One of my eclipse amps randomly broke all on it's own 2 weeks ago. It has a yr warranty though so it's currently out for repair free of charge. Does your amp have any type of warranty on it? If it's only 3-5 months old then you might be fine, warranty work takes some time though for some companies, not sure how long it'd be for you.

lucky for me i have several old but still mint condition amps laying around for a quick replacement, i was able to verify that everything was hooked up properly.

like BZRollin said, disconnect the speaker leads and turn your Deck on. If your amp blows a fuse, its an internal short. If your power wire at the connector of the amp was shorted, the amp would be fine (it wouldn't turn on, but it'd be ok) and the fuse thats under your hood would be blowing.

goodluck

if its an internal short, would I then have to get a new amp?

Yep, seems like my amp broke. I borrowed one of my friends amps, and plugged it into my sub and its working fine. I guess thats what I get for buying a 60$ profile california amp . But, I already purchased a new amp, rockford fosgate 301s which should be coming hopefully by the end of this week

Just curious, how much did you pay for the RF 301S?

Actually, I just passed it up, I went for a sony xplod 1000w amp, it was a little cheaper and had more rms output for my sub. Also had a bunch of protection circuitry features. I was gonna get the 301s brand new for around 130$ shipped.

oh, cause I JUST sold a 501S for $175 on eBay, brand new in the box...be VERY careful of SONY XPLODE advertiased numbers, they use numbers we like to call W.L.S. (When Lightning Strikes) If you think you bought a 1000W amp for $130 (or there abouts) you have been misled, what did you end up buying? Have a link to the website? Just tryin to help ya out, don't wanna see ya get screwed outta your hard earned $$

yea, its right here . I didnt buy it from crutchfield, I bought it off e-bay for about 121$ shipped. I appreciate you're help, I'm gonna bridge it for that 400w rms. I think it will be decent, since I already have a 780w sony xplod amp that I been using for my highs for about a yr and a half, and it seems great. Let me know you're take on it though. Opinions are always welcomed . Also, if you want to check out its protection cicuitry features, its listed on the e-bay page here .

Ok, now another question. I finally got my amp yesterday, and took me about 2 hrs to re-wire the whole thing to be 4 gauge. Now, moment of truth, I turn on my headunit, and all that happens is the power light blinks for a second then turns back off. I know its not the fuse, because everytime I turn on my headunit its just blinks, then turns back off? I cant figure out whats wrong with it. I have 2 amps in my trunk, one 800w for my inifiti kappa's and kenwoods, then one 1000w for my sub. I have the 800w supplying power to my 1000w amp. I hooked up the power wire from the 800w directly to my 1000w amp, then it works fine. But, then when I reconnect it using the 4 gauge wire, it just blinks on, then off again. Im guessing its my 4 gauge wiring then? But I just bought it brand new. Any idea's on what could be wrong?

oh, I also forgot to say it's just the 1000w amp for my sub that blinks on then off. My 800w amp thats supplying power to it, is running just fine, while my 1000w amp is off

ok, your problem is most likely that your head unit can't supply all of the current required by both of your amps to turn them on. Try this, disconnect the remote turn-on wire from the amp that "blinks". Use a small wire to connect the +12V terminal on the amp to the remote turn on lead. If you both of your amps run in this condition, then it means you'll need a relay in order to supply the current to trun on both amps. If this is the case, lemme know and we can go from there.

i totally dont agree with that. i have the REM... remote wire .. which turns everything on ... Wired to my monitor, dvd player, 2 amps, my surround sound unit and TWO caps. And u think that it cant turn them on? very doubt full... its not powering the amps with that wire its sending a constand power... very little if im not mistaken.. just to turn them on.. The amps are not powered by this wire in any way shape or form. it just tells the equiment to turn on, since all of it is connected to power constantly.

OK, well I am an engineer for a well known audio manufacturer, what are your credentials? Let him try my test and see what results he gets, ok?

no its not ok cause the REM wire COULD have a break in it ... its not possible that it CANT turn on TWO amps. thats just not realistic. sorry.
