mdf or particle?
mdf or particle?
what material do i use? which one i better? i'm going to make my enclosure for my kicker s12l5... the mdf is $10 more expensive than the particle board.. i was just wondering what's the diffrence between the 2... and which one is better for my enclosure.. thanks!
MDF is more expensive because it's a stronger material. It flexes way less under the pressure your sub is going to be putting on it. MDF will make your sub sound much tighter, the particle board will give you a boomy, unclean sounding bass. You will be way happier with the MDF.
MDF is definitely what you want to get. It's surely more than just a few ounces heavier, didn't some one say once that a 4 by 8 weighs like 96 pounds? whatever it is, it's heave. it's so much more durable though, it won't bow or crack like particle, or fall apart.
Yes the MDF is much stronger than the particle board because the particle board is composed of tiny chips of wood and is not pressed together at the same psi that MDF is. If you look at a cross section of particle board it has spaces or air voids and is not solid all the way through like MDF, which also makes it less stable and resistant to vibrations. Ludlam Theory is correct on the weight, 96 lbs for 3/4". The humidity effects the MDF's weight because like all wood it takes on moisture and will cause it to weigh more, not by much maybe only a few pounds but it does effect the weight. As I had mentioned before in a previous post an Ultra Light MDF is avalible and weighs in at around 65 lbs per 4X8X3/4" sheet and will cut down on weight slightly, but most lumber yards will not stock that type and may cost more to order.
what? 90+ lbs?! geez! this is what i got from kicker.. the size of a seald box..7-11/16x14x14-5/8x16.. how much do you think it would weigh? i have a gc kit and im using stock shocks.. i think if i put that much of a weight in my rear my shocks will blow. because i pass by many bump when i go to school..should i just try to build the fiber enclosure? thanks!

huh... you gave 4 measurements,
7 11/16 x 14 x 14 5/8 x 16?
lets assume that the 14 in the middle doesnt exist.
so now we work with 7 11/16 x 14 5/8 x 16.
also assuming that there is no double stacking of wood, no bracing, 3/4" is used, and all that stuff
6 pieces of wood are used
front and back (assuming im picturing this right) 14 5/16 x 16, 2 of these. 458 sq inches
top and bottom, 16 x 6 3/16 , 2 of these 198 sq inches
sides, 12 13/16 x 6 3/16, 2 of these 150.8 sq inches
full sheet of MDF = 4608 sq inches
divide sum of all up there by total = .175
multiply that by 96
16.8
add screw, glue, carpet weight
17.5ish
add sub weight, (dont know what sub)
there you go.... thats a tiny *** box man....
now noone ever ask me again how to find the weight of your box

I'm not insulting your knowledge, but for the most part all of the things youve been telling people aren't entirely correct.
