light weight MDF

For those of you who care, I found a light weight MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) called Ultra Light MDF. The weight of regular 3/4" thick MDF is 94lbs. per sheet, but the Ultra Light only weighs 65lbs. per sheet in the same thickness! The Ultra Light MDF also has the same strength and density as regular MDF. If you are really worried about the weight in your trunk this is the way to go. Depending on where you live it may be more difficult to get, it most likely has to be special ordered from a lumber yard.

The birch plywood you are talking about is probably a wafer core and weighs 74 lbs per sheet. There is also a lumber core and a veneer core, both of which weigh more. I should point out that the MDF has a moisture content of 5% or less from the factory and depending on who manufactured the MDF and where it was kept (in a damp location) will effect the weight of the sheet, this will account for the 2lbs. difference per sheet. I know this because I sell this $h!+ and other building materials.

Nope. Might work good for a box though...what do ya think? It's light weight and has a high density.

way too expensive... also it doesnt absord enough... i need it to make new panels for sections of the car... also it would be massively expensive..

whats the tensile strength of .75" MDF ? ill let you know what thickness of ABS you'd need and then let you know how much a 1.0 cubic foot box would cost to make... i know it would look cool as hell though... a plastic box...

One of the hottest enclosure I've ever seen is made by Element Enclosures. They use a wood based material call Xylos. When I used to work work for a speaker manufacturor and went to the CES show a couple years ago, we had a meeting with the owner of the company.
The enclosures were amazing, had a plastic feel to them. They had 2 of they set up on a table, one was full of water with gold fish in it and the other had a plexi glass plate on the front of it with a pressure guage which they had 40psi in. He told us to take a lump of clay and mold it, and he could make it. All the stuff is paintable too. Not sure what happened to the company, there website is down but you can check out the product at a couple places online.
