Is 1/2inch MDF ok for a small single-sub enclosure?

i just got 2 Alpine Type-E 10" subs, and a Profile 600MSX mono amp, and im working on building my custom trunk enclosure. my plan is to put each sub in one front corner of the trunk, right behind where the taillights are. i removed the carpeting in the trunk, and there looks to be plenty of space to build a decent size enclosure there. here is my problem: i need to use 1/2inch MDF for the enclosures, because there is not enough room for the box if i use 3/4inch. everything i've read on building sub boxes says use 3/4inch MDF at least, but i want to know if its ok if i use 1/2inch. i mean, the box is small and built in a way that it seems it will be very strong, and doesnt have any large panels so i wouldnt imagine the thinner walls would resonate too bad, as compared to 3/4inch. how should i proceed?

thanks.

Not really.. 5/8 is the thinnest I'd go and make sure to brace the corners...

The smallest I ever went was 3/4" for MDF. and that held 2 Cerwin Vega's. I actually ended up shattering the box in a USAC dB drag competition. My little '85 Honda CRX HF was never the same again, I never got the smell of MDF out of the car

yeah but this isnt your regular square box, i mean it has many small panels because it is made to fit in the corner of the trunk which is an odd shape. it seems to me because of all the joints and everything it'd be strong enough using 1/2inch...what would be the worst that could happen if it was not strong enough?

argh, friggin 3/4inch will make it so hard to fit...damn

IMO nothing, I don't think you will blow the box apart or crack it. Even if you do, which I seriously doubt that you would, all you would have to do is build a new box. 1/2 inch should be fine. True, 3/4, or 5/8 is recommended, but not necesarry, I mean they are only 10's. I had a box built from 1/2 inch for two kicker comp vr 12's and it sounded awesome and I didn't brace anything or do anything special, just the box with a divider. You can go with 3/4, but you don't HAVE to.

.5" will flex more which will make it sound sloppy/boomy. Also you say you have a buncha little panels... a buncha flaxing panels and it won't stay sealed. More panels means more joints which means more likelyhood of it not staying sealed. Stick with the 3/4"

3/4 or 5/8 is recommended by most individuals. 1/2 really is too thin, and I don't think that 3/4 is that much more expensive, go with what you know is best, that way you don't have to worry about what the worst that could happen......I could understand your dilemma if 3/4 was 4 times the price or something and you needed 80 feet of it.......

get 3/4
