mono-amp wiring

Hey I'm getting two kicker solobaric 12's probably. I was thinkin 10's but I may go with the 12's. anywho if I have a jbl 1200.1 mono amp, should I get 2-ohm or 4-ohm speakers. I've checked out the basic car audio link but its a lil confusing. The amp requires a 2ohm load to do its best. These DVC speakers throw me off. I know they just offer more flexibilty in wiring configurations, but is it possible to get a pair of DVC 4ohm or 2ohm speakers configured to a 2ohm load for the amp or is it mandantory that I get one or the other? thanx

You could wire the two 2 ohm DVC subs in series, then in parallel for 2 ohms mono

These are two responses from two different people. I'm assuming from this that either the 2ohm DVC or 4ohm DVC can be effectively wired to a 2ohm load for a mono-amplifier.....is that correct?

Response #1 "I would get 2 of the DVC 4 ohm subs. This way you could hook up the voice coils on each sub in parallel effectively makeing your subs 2 ohm. Then you would have 2, 2 ohm subs matching your amps max output and giveing you a total of 740 rms power to your subs. "

Response #2 "You could wire the two 2 ohm DVC subs in series, then in parallel for 2 ohms mono"

It would be the second, what i said earlier. The fist oen would be ideal if you were getting a 2 channel amp. because you are getting a mono amp, you would need it to be wired into 2 ohms x 1

thanks for your help, I've got one last question though. I have just one solobaric now, and I believe that it is a 4ohm DVC. I want to get another 12, what should I do. Throw away the 4ohm and by 2 new 2ohm woofers? Get another 4ohm and just try and find a 2 channel amp that operates a 2ohms? Do you know of any good amps for the latter problem

Well, you're in luck, just get another 4 ohm dvc and you'll be fine. Wire each sub in parallel, making each sub 2 ohms, then wire them in parallel again, for 1 ohm. the JBL is stable down to 1 ohm, but there is no power increase from 2 ohm mono to 1 ohm mono.
Check this thread out, they had this problem already.

You've really helped out alot Ed appreciate it. One more question for ya. I got everything you told me up to now, but WHAT IF YOU HAD:

1 2ohm DVC - wire coils in parallel dropping it to 1 ohm
1 4ohm DVC - wire coils in parallel dropping it to 2 ohm

then wiring the two subs in parallel.....so .5ohm (from the 2ohm) and 1ohm (from the 4ohm)???

So overall what kind of load would be on the amp? Thanx again

first of all, id definitely go for two 4 ohm dvc woofers, for this reason:

if you ever got really smart and creative about wiring, you could wire it for 4 ohm operation, feed the pair 600 rms total, chillin, or when you take it to the dealer, anywhere, blah, blah, blah.

then when you wanna do some fatty bumping, you could wire it for 1 ohm operation, feed the pair all 1200 rms, and let loose!

when your REALLY trick, you can use relays to electronically change the wiring, flip a switch on teh dash, its 4 ohms, flipc bac, its 1 ohm

as to the 4 ohm and 2 ohm DVC woofers, heres how it works:

equal loads share power equally.

lower loads hog more power. if you have a 4 ohm SVC and 2 ohm SVC subwoofer hooked in series, its a 6 ohm load on teh amp, and the 2 ohm subwoofer gets 2/3rds the totall current being sent. So if you had an amp that put out 1200 rms at 6 ohms, the 2 ohm woofer would get 800 rms, and the 4 ohm woofer would get 400 rms. get it?

now! we have a 4 ohm DVC and a 2 ohm DVC woofer, right? lets consider our options.....

after a bit of figuring, i figure we can wire the 2 ohm DVC to 4 ohms, then all 3 remaining sets of wires in parrallel, for a total load of 1.3333 ohms. perfect! we hook that up to your jbl 1200.1 now, and figure it puts out 1200, since its between 2 and 1 ohm.

sounds great! but what abotu teh power distribution? this may not turn out so favorable.....

we look at what teh amp sees..... three 4 ohm loads wired in parrallel together. each 4 ohm load gets an equal piece of that 1200 rms. so 400 rms each. but one of those 4 ohm loads is an entire woofer! so the 4 ohm DVC L7 gets 800 rms total. the 2 ohm dvc L7 gets 400 total, 200 per coil. this isnt looking so great!

definitely get the same impedance woofer for the same woofer

got it! Thanks for the help. Bye the way what kinda rig you talking about changing the ohms with the flip-of-a-switch?? Is that some drop dead serious complex thing or just some secret that you wanna keep? All in all, I'm gonna do what you said and get the same ohm woofer. The more you ask, the more you learn....thanx peoples
