Q about installing system in cavalier
A friend of mine is asking me and another friend to install a system into his 2003 Chevy Cavalier. . . can anyone give me a link or clue on how to get the front doors, rear deck and possibly the rear seats off? Thank you.
The factory radio needs to remain connected to the vehicle. By removing the factory radio you will loose (if equipped): keyless entry programming, ability to reset the tire pressure and oil change monitors, steering wheel radio controls, On Star, and a few other things. Set everything (like the keyless entry) before you remove the radio. Everything set by the factory radio (except for On-Star) will still work, just the radio will have to be hooked back up for the owner to reset and reprogram each feature. Schoshe and a few other manufactures make an extended wiring harness that allows the radio to still be hooked up and placed in the trunk. The wiring harnesses are about 18’ long. It's a little complicated, but worth the effort if you want to keep some of those functions.

We went and looked at it right now and if we do need to relocate the headunit we know what we're going to do. . . do you have any idea about how much the wiring harness extension is going to cost because my friend with the chevy is on a budget.

Does anyone know anything bout taking the rear deck off? I kinda eyeballed the doors, center console, seats, etc. but am still kinda confused on the rear deck though. . . any suggestions?
Actually unless the factory radio says RDS on the front of it you wont have to relocate the factory radio. You can use a regular metra 70-2003 harness. If it doesnt have the rds on the front then the only thing you have a run is an accessory wire to hook to the red wire coming off the stereo. There is no accessory wire behind the actual deck and as long as you dont mind losing the door chimes then no special harness is needed. If it says RDS on the deck then you need to get a metra 70-2003T harness which runs the full length of the car and relocates your factory deck in the trunk (easiest to tuck it behind the carpet on the drivers side)
As far as the rear deck goes, you have to remove the rear seat. The bottom seat should pop up if you pull on the front edge. Once that is out then there will be 2 T-45 or T-50 (cant remember which) holding in the seatbelts and also the seat brackets. Once those are out you should be able to slide the seat up and pull it out. You should then see plastic pins that hold the trim behind the seats. Pop those out and pull back the plastic pieces. The rear deck should now slide out with a slight flex to the center but becareful at the edges where the seatbelts go thru because they crack easily. You should be able to pop the rear speakers out by hand (normally a push tab near the rear and they will fold towards you)
Front doors are easy if the car has power windows, but if it has manual windows then get a window crank removal tool (pepboys $6
) or you can use a hook pick tool. Push the door panel in and look for a c clip holding the window crank on. Pop that off and then theres a couple screws in the door and a couple 7 or 10mm bolts (dont remember exactly which or locations) and your good to go.

It does have RDS on the deck but my friend says he doesn't care if he loses it or the door chimes. . . is there anything serious that would be missing if we didn't hook up the stock deck again? If we didn't put the deck back on the only thing he would mind not having would be the keyless entry but is there anyway to keep the keyless entry without having to relocate the deck?
And you said something about a T-45 or a T-50. . . wtf is that?

Just look in the owners manual under settings. The info you need should be near the radio instructions. Have the deck hooked up, ignition set to accessory, radio/CD/tape turned off, and hold the power button in for 3-5 seconds. The settings should come up on the factory radio display. Follow the directions in the manuel on how to cycle through the features, like keyless entry. Once everything is set you should be able to disconnect the deck and all the settings will work. Atleast that is how my car works. Also if there is any error or maintenance messages show up in the "idiot light" square on the instrument panel, the deck has to be hooked back up to clear them out.

One last question about the 2003T wiring harness. On the center of the extension (the part that goes to the stock deck in the trunk) there's 2 seperate wires labeled LEFT FRONT positive and negative that go into a seperate harness that is shorter than the other one, but we can see the speaker wires on the main harness to the aftermarket deck. Should we just disregard this harness or does it serve some purpose?
I'm pretty sure with that harness that you still lose your door chimes when the lights are left on. If i remember right that is used to hook up a speaker that will make the chime noises only. If you dont mind losing them then dont worry about it. The 2 wires that branch off are near the kick panel correct?

What do you mean they're by the kick panel? I'm looking at them on my desk right now. . .

Sorry thought you had the harness run in the car already.
When you run that harness under the dash and down the driver side of the car, then those 2 wires should hang out near the kick panel and they are definatly for a speaker for the door chimes.
