80 Amp Alternator Upgrade

Has anyone gotten one of the 80 Amp alternators from oriellys or autozone for their 7g (as opposed to the 70 Amp oem spec ones)? If so, what was your experience with it? It's a small upgrade, but wondering if it's enough to give extra juice for better stereo (stock) performance and better charging in winter time.

And my current alternator is working as it should, it's just the oem 70 Amp ones are kinda wimpy as we all know.

Oh, what do you mean? Not that I'm doubting your advice, I just see a lot (read: more than one lol) of posts about getting really snazzy 160+ amp alternators for serious audio setups in our cars. Do you just mean non-oem direct replacement parts from AutoZone?

Re: 80 Amp Alternator Upgrade

I've never upgraded an alternator on my Civic, but if I were you, I would try to find a model made by Denso that would supply you with what you need. Denso is the OEM for the alternators in 7th gen Civics.

It looks like the 2nd generation CR-Vs used a 90 amp alternator. So a DENSO 2104168 would do the trick once you figured out how to mount it correctly. They use the K-series motors as opposed to our D-series, so I imagine they won't just swap right over.

Re: 80 Amp Alternator Upgrade

To follow up: after further research, it looks like the symptoms I was looking to fix with a beefier alt are more due to poor factory grounds. To anyone looking into better recharging in their 7g civic: Replace the battery > engine and engine > frame grounds with some large gauge straps, and add a battery > frame ground. Night and day difference in headlight/dash brightness, radio performance, cold cranking power, and engine response for like $25.
