Fuel Gauge

2004 Civic EX automatic trans, 99,000 miles.
My fuel gauge has been acting up. About 6 months back it would occasionally act up, but mostly indicate properly. Lately it does not seem to work at all. Anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Fuel Gauge

I'd connect a voltmeter to the circuit for the fuel sending unit and note the differences between when the gauge works vs. not working.....

Then make a judgement as to if the cause is inside the tank, or elsewhere in the car.

(Actually, I'd watch what happens on my scanner first...then move to the voltmeter testing.)

There's also an OLD service bulletin regarding possible gauge cluster issues.

Re: Fuel Gauge

I ran the self diagnostic on the instrument cluster. All other gauge needles swept full and back smoothly, but fuel gauge just fluttered a bit. No error code. Is it possible to buy a good used cluster and change just the fuel gauge? I would not want to change the whole cluster and have an odometer difference.

Re: Fuel Gauge

^Right. Find a good (and compatible) gauge cluster and swap the whole unit.

Note: Odometer data is stored in the cluster, so if you need it to be accurate you'd have to send your replacement unit out to a speedo repair facility to change the mileage.
We (at work) use this one http://www.paspeedo.com/

If you do not do this and just run with whatever the odometer says on the replacement, you better document the mileage differences well for the next owners.

Re: Fuel Gauge

Warranty is long over on my car. Did find on Ebay someone that repairs instrument clusters for $80. According to ad, No issues with mileage since original is repaired and returned. Turns out he is located not too far from me, so I could bring it there and skip shipping hassles.
