Alternator Question

I have a system in my car and i feel that i put alot of stress on my alternator since, before i did the big 3, just putting the heat or a/c would dim my lights, lol, but since the big 3 thats not as much of an issue, i was wondering what you guys think of aftermarket alternators with higher outputs, and what they cost usually, and how hard are they to install.

Re: Alternator Question

its hard to say, and yes the stock ones barely put out 70 amps not even enough to run all the normal car accessories. the problem with a higher output is 1. the engine will work harder 2. the ELD may not even see the extra power output. the load detector adjusts alternator output based on what you use in the car. so if everythings turned off, it will cut the alt output quite a bit. when you use heater or a/c, it will put out a bit of extra power. the problem happens when you install a system, you connect it directly to the battery. so as far as the eld is concerned, you have no system. and the alt will never put out any extra voltage to compensate for all the power the amps are drawing.

Exclamation Re: Alternator Question

is there a way to trick the ELD into thinkin you have a boom box so that it will put out a bit more??? i'm putting a second sealed batt into the trunk with a isoloator relay to see if I get more boom and less head light dimming. but I might need a touch more voltage to get the back battery charged, another thing when it comes to alternator upgrades I've heard of people using large case alt's instead of the little small honda case's, what alternator's are these large cases that are almost able to fit. with a mill i can cut stuff down and I have some welder buddy's that may be able to extend certain parts. a bigger alternator maybe only a 100 would help me and countless others!!!
