Rear 6x9s Too Large!
Rear 6x9s Too Large!
So I just used one of our extremely handy DIYs to remove my rear deck and get at my classic "paper series" drivers. Proud of my handy work, I slid my new Clarion 6x9s into the holes only to find that they hit the trunk torsion bars...
So my options now are to remove the torsion bars, which I don't really want to do, or make spacers for my 6x9s. Has anyone made rear spacers before? I'm thinking 1/2 in should be enough. Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Elix1r

is there enough room upwards for spacers? could you just use washers as spacers? It has been a while since i was back in there, forgot what it all looks like

Yeah there should be room for spacers. 1/2 in should do. Would washers be alright? Wouldn't I lose sound quality if there is a leak between the front of the woofer and the back/the two sound waves cancel each other?

When installing aftermarket speakers, there are these things called mounting brackets. You can buy them from any best buy circuit city car stereo install place, or other car stereo shop. It's a plastic ring which appropriately spaces the speakers from the deck.
Don't use washers, that's ghetto.
I used to work at Best Buy in the car audio section. The mobile entertainment department I worked at was ranked number one in the state in terms of install service and quality etc. So long story short I worked for a good one. The guys that worked in the install bay, all but one of them had been doing car audio for years before that, so I learned a lot from them.
When giving a customer a quote, I would always estimate a little more then the price of the speaker, to include installation materials, one of which is the mounting bracket. Not all cars need them, but you might be able to benefit from them if it's too deep.
Oh and one last thing, make sure you use speaker harnesses, it's so much easier to get the speaker in if you do.

Yeah I used 1/2 in. mdf and they work flawlessly. Two of the screws were hard to get in because of the torsion bars, but I managed. Ha ha washers would be very ghetto. For anyone else who is planning on doing this, note that I trimmed a pointless ring of plastic that was on the rear deck off so the speakers would fit. The deck went perfectly back into place with all clips in place. No rattles what so ever. Very easy and simple install if you are willing to make spacers out of mdf.
