brightest/whitest halogen?
brightest/whitest halogen?
I am planning to replace my headlight bulbs because one of the factory bulbs blew out. Which do you think is the brightest and whitest...I know whitest doesn't mean brightest but a good combination of both?

stick with name brands, filament position is key here. and alot of aftermarket just wont be bright enough. if you have to have a coated white bulb, philips bluevision or osram cool blue won best buy award and got the highest ratings from autoexpress. can buy from autolamps-online.com and powerbulbs.com

Re: brightest/whitest halogen?
im currently running xtravision and they are nice, but prolly not what the op is looking for. its just clear bulb.
Re: brightest/whitest halogen?
I just got Sylvania Silverstars and they weren't as bright as I would have liked but the whiteness I liked. I heard the Piaa Extreme Whites were very bright and anything from Philips was good. I don't know about MTEC and Polarg but I heard the Nokya has super blue/purple bulbs but they are really dull and dim..no light at all. But..of course, this is just what I have heard, I have only used stock and Sylvania Silverstars so I just want to know what other people think.

Re: brightest/whitest halogen?
but I loved them. I go to work really early in the morning and come home when the sun sets so my lights are always on. I guess that has something to do with it but I hope the catz bulbs I got from you are just as bright. Joined: Sep 2002

Re: brightest/whitest halogen?
hmm, ive been running boosted xtravision for a few months now. but yeah any +30,50,80 bulb only lasts maybe 200 hrs max. thats the tradeoff for brighter light. but its cheap, i got my twin pack for $15. depends how much you use em too. i love driving at night so prolly 30-60 mins per day i guess. i use my fog/drl during the day in bad weather tho to save headlights.

i saw the weekly ad for some Sylvania Premium Headlights Silverstar Ultra for $30 with a $20 rebate at pepboys. i might just be getting a set too!

Re: brightest/whitest halogen?
yeah wait until they go on sale. advance often has 25% off bulbs.
i have catz zeta ballasts that boost the voltage to the bulbs up to 15.4v, which makes them quite a bit brighter than running off the stock alternator output. search ebay, there is one seller that carries em.

Re: brightest/whitest halogen?
From my limited knowledge of physics and chemistry, I think any Halogen bulb is going to be the same colour. I mean, when you burn a gas, depending on the temperature you burn it at, it's going to be the same colour. So what you might want to do is take a look at each product and see which other gases are included in the mix that will produce a whiter light. I guess a xenon content might be whiter, some others would be argon or neon. Though I'm pretty sure neon burns green.
Hopefully someone who knows more about chemistry can confirm this or put me out of my misery.

Re: brightest/whitest halogen?
yeah youre right, xenon gas allows the filament to burn a tad bit hotter and brighter. the real way to make a bulb both whiter AND brighter is either increase the voltage to the bulb like i have, or buy an upgrade harness and run an overwatt bulb like the h4 osram hyper series 65w bulb. those coated blue bulbs do work, in that they block much of the yellwoish portion of the light emitted, but this makes the overall output less than a clear bulb (even tho the coated bulb appears to be whiter in color). its a trick.
Re: brightest/whitest halogen?
I don't know how they do it, but some bulbs are definately whiter than others. If you compare the Sylvania Silverstar Ultras with the stock, you can definately tell the difference.
Also, does anyone know what type of bulb the OEM '05 Honda Civic Fog Lights use. Is it like H3 or H4 or something? I am only informed on the 9000 series.

Re: brightest/whitest halogen?
HIR are the brightest bulb by far without going hid, but their sizes are limited. i know they dont make it for H4.
Re: brightest/whitest halogen?
... apparently the 9011 bulb will fit , in the lows .. but a piece has to be "shaven " down in order for them to fit .. hopefully i dont get screwed lol... if so ... hid's for sure :0

Re: brightest/whitest halogen?
yea the shaving part is pretty easy. its like one tab or something. people do it to fit h9 bulbs into our h11 fogs too for alot more light.
