Need More Juice???
ok, i travel alot and i run my laptop using a cigarette lighter plug converter 100w and i'm charging my phone at the same time and i notice the light on the plugs looks like it's deeming... am i sucking more power than my alternator can put out? <<< no green jokes please :P
so here's just an example, i'm not electrically inclined <<<
so EXAMPLE
headlights = 100w???
amp/subs = 75w
laptop = 90w
cellphone =10w
275watts? how much wattage does OEM alternator put out? do i need a bigger one? what brand? where? how much? thanks for the help guys!!!

Re: Need More Juice???
put simply, u need a high output alternator, about 250 bucks at a local stereo shop or online, its easy, but the only way to get enough power to run all that stuff
Re: Need More Juice???
Youll be happier if you get a high output alternator. I ended up destroying mine, and I put a high output in and no I have no worries. haha. The alternator is a total pain to change. lol. Not hard, just time consuming.

Re: Need More Juice???
i went to Iraq for my second deployment for 16months
i just got back last month... so i've been traveling alot spending all the cash i saved
... i'm gettin' an STi this month
i thought i'd throw it out here
so ok, it's amperage and NOT wattage... ok so any ideal numbers here? how much OUTPUT am I looking at when buying an alternator? how much AMPERS do I have on my OEM ALTERNATOR?
thanks for the help guys...

Re: Need More Juice???
your wattage for your subs seem a little low, but the equation for calculating amperage from watts is P=IxE where P is your wattage, I is amperage and E is voltage. if you rearrange it to P/E=I you get 275W/12V=22A
a stock alternator puts out between 65 and 75 amps you should be good,
but, like I said, your sub/amp seems a little low.
you should be able to run a 600W system with no problem at all, and a 1000W system with some minor dimming of the headlights, it is when you get past 1500W I have found that stuff seems to not work properly.
If your wattage is what you say, you won't need a better alternator, you might want to look into getting a better inverter, hardwiring one would be the best way to go.

Re: Need More Juice???
the wattage on my amp is not accurate it was just a GUESS-TIMATE... i have rockfords pushing 1200watts and yes the lights are dimming and when i plug in my laptop then it gets even worse on idle, but when i'm running 2500 and up RPM seems fine... but i have extra cash to buy me an alternator that put out a bit more...
so ok, my target amperage should be around 100+amps then? ok cool... thanks for the help guys...
