question about gain
If my amp is 600rms and the gain is about 3/4 then the amp can only push 3/4 of the rms, right? so about 450rms is what the sub would get with the deck on max, right? so a would a 500rms sub be ok with that?

oh god, no
gain is a sensitivity control that is meant to make your amp achieve full output based on the level of input signal... so in example if you have a deck with 4v preouts and a gain that is adjustable between 4 and 0.2 volts, you would set it all the way down and still get full output. Turn it up any higher and you risk blowing up both your sub and your amp.
gain is not a volume control!!!!!!
and yes 450w on a 500w would be fine... sub ratings are just recommendations for power

on my brutus hifonics amp, it seems like the amp pushes the sub harder when the gain is lower (.2v) which is all the way to the right (clockwise)
if it goes to the 9v mark, it barely sounds. my deck has 6.5v preamp outputs, my gain is set on the halfway mark
Dont' be fooled by labels. When an amplifier labels it's gains control in Voltage, it's generally the voltage required to reach full power given a certain signal. So, when you turn the **** all the way to the right, which is turning the gains "up", the label says .2v - what it's saying is that the gains on the amp or so god damned high at this setting, it would only take an input signal of .2v to reach max power.
Conversely, when you turn em down to 9v, its saying the amp needs an imput signal of 9 volts to reach full power - you are given it 6.5v theoretically, so it doesn't reach near full power - it barely sounds.

JL has a method to determine what is the best sensitivity setting on the input for best power. Such as turning off all HU eq settings then setting the volume at 3/4 then slowly adjusting the gain to reach a certain level of output voltage coming out of the amp speaker connection outputs. Of course this is with say a 50hz sine wave and no speakers actually connected using a DMM. This was its a recommended wattage on output.
I believe hifonics has a similar method to setting up the amp from my old days of using them.
