A guy I know's car just got totalled
. He had $3000 worth of audio done to it at tweeter. I could not for the life of me figure out where the price came from. Well, while removing the audio for him, I discovered it. Tweeter sold this guy Boston RX 5 1/4" drivers along with Tweeters I can't even Identify. Also some 6" Boston RX series coax for the rear deck. one Alpine 12, an audio control eq and 3 amps. Yup, 3 amps. 1 2 ch for the sub, 1 4 channel for the rears, 2 channels unused. one 4 channel for the mids and tweets. All V12 amps for aroung 350 ea. Guess a set of components and a 4 channel for the fronts and rears would have required too much common sense. . . Or too little money. What bastards! They took this guy for a ride. They could have saved him the EQ and one whole amp if they just used a mono amp, 4 ch amp, component combination. It would probably sound better too considering they obviously didn't know how to run tweets and mids full range and cross them properly. They also crammed his Apline tape deck, yes they sold him a tape deck, into the dash soooo hard they literally cut the antenna wire in half and had to repair it.
Ouch, I just called Tweeter for a goof to ask some prices. They charged him around $1100 for parts just including his front and rear speakers and amps for them. I found out for $1000 at the same shop, they could do MB Quart Premiums in the front, Quart Reference coaxs in the rear powered by a 4 channel slash series JL AMP. OOPS.

Well It's possible that he just took the experts opinion at Tweeter. Not everyone has the time and means to learn all about car audio before having something done.
If you were going to have surgery, are you moron for not learning medicine before hand? It's tweeter's responsability to give him the best stuff for the best money if that's what he asks for.

bastards... they tryed to screw me on my audio equipment too... they try and steamroll you by talking "over your head" and get you to commit right there, it is like Boiler Room ( the movie, if you have not see, pick it up, it's great) lucky I had some audio experience and was able to get out w/ out getting screwed, but it was close...

well i think they bi-amped the components which IMO is a good thing. he doesn't need rear speakers at all, although that's personal preference. if he did want them then he only needed a 2 channel amp for them. eq not neccessary but for fine tuning it's nice.
1. just cuz they work at "tweeter" they are not an expert.
2. It is very likely he just took their advice. thats my point.
3. he didn't have to learn everything, but a little about an hour research could of saved him like a grand.
4. Don't ever compare surgery to car audio!!! and yes if I was having surgery I would learn everything I could about the procedure, all alternatives, advant/disadvens.
5. It's tweeters responsibility to make money!!
WOW, I can see why hes ur friend you guys have alot in common!

if his goal was not to spend that much money then yes it was a waste. good speakers are not IMO bi-amping gives you more control although you say there wasn't any crossovers so it is a waste.

edit....i don't know why i quoted what i did, it is afterall st patrick's day or atleast it was a little while ago.
The thing about most rappers is, they gauge their bling by the Money it costs. Shaq would probably rather pay $1200 for a $200 head unit if it meant he could say he had a $10000 instead of a $9000.
Also, I understand what some people are saying that this guy could have done more research, but the fact is, he is a 40 year old business man who doesnt' have time to scour ww.eliteaudio.com for knowledge and information. He relied on the trusted word of professionals and they screwed hm. It's easy for us to say, "should have done more research" or "who spends more than $1000 without research" but we just say that because we are audio people. We often don't realize how much goes into educating ourselves about this stuff, and we have a genuine interest. This dude couldn't care less about off-axis or transient response. He just want's good sound. Besides, how many of us took the time to learn the ins and outs of auto insurance before selecting a policy?? It just makes me sick when these people take advantage of a guy who's trying to put his 2 kids through college and enjoy some of the small luxaries in life. I called the bastards to tear them up, unfortunately the salesman no longer is with the company. Hopefully something bad happened to him. . .

my brother-in-law works at tweeter in south jersey. he hates being a salesperson (possibly for your reason), he now does install and he's pretty good. But I can't say he rips us off, if anything, he damn near gives us stuff away. But I guess thats some of the perks of having someone who works there and gets everything for almost wholesale.
