Relocating tweeter.. has anyone placed theirs there?
Relocating tweeter.. has anyone placed theirs there?
Hi!
I'm looking for a great place to put my JL Audio tweeters in my 2003 sedan.
I came up with a great idea. It will require modding the car a little but I think it might be worth it in the end.
I'm looking to place the tweeter near the side mirror by making a hole in the plastic (how is this part called exactly?). They're just $5 CDN each to replace so it's no big deal to put some new plastic pieces back when I bring the car back (lease).
Has anyone tried this? How is the sound? I think this might be a pretty good location for great highs (although the tweeters won't be directed to my ear).
Since I have power mirrors, I will need to move the mirror connector a little. Has anyone done this? Any ideas?
Take a look at the picture, it will give you a good idea of what I want to do. The pic is from the passenger's side.
Thanks!

Ahhhhh.....That's the stock loction on US civics. IMO I think it is better to mount it as close to the mid-range as possible. It will be alot more off axis having the tweeter up that high. But if it's something you want to do go for it.
Yeah, that's where I put mine. I just surface mounted them and they look great. I can hear a bit of separation between the tweeter and midrange, mainly while listening to jazz, but it's not too bad. I mounted them there for exactly the same reason you are considering it... I'm leasing too...
Also, you (and I) can't get the stock tweeter pods as Megahurtz suggested, because they only make pods for coupes.

Brash,
Do you also have power mirrors? What did you do about the mirror plug in there? It is in the way of the tweeter.
Also, any idea to mount it a little off axis to have the sound directed towards my ears?
Thanks!

I have power mirrors and the plug served as a problem. I had to take it all apart and hard wire it together so there would be no plug...or you can just unplug it.
Its not like you have to have them. Here is a pic of mine....
I have power windows, so I don't have a plug up there...
I was going to mount them so they pointed toward me as much as possible, but I ended up attaching the housing wrong, so they were at weird angles. Turned out fine though... and I've since heard that tweeters up there might even sound better if they aren't pointed directly at you. I wouldn't worry about it, though you could probably make a little circular wooden wedge (out of a dowel, say) if you wanted to get them pointed toward you more (assuming you are surface mounting them). Be careful that you don't have them stick out too far or they may hit the inside of the car when you close the door. Mine just barely fit in there. The bottom of the tweeters are only a few 32nds of an inch away from the dash... (I probably could have mounted them further out, though.)

That would be the USDM stock Ex sail panel. Why it required modifying to put a tweet there I do not know, as my aftermarket tweets went in mine just fine and I have power mirrors as well.

they don't come with tweeters stock period in the US. if you got phillipenes connections you can find them there, however i know no one who has.
i liked having them by the door handles. i'm gonna play around with location before i install my new pair (a pillar? behind door lock? lower in door?). just want to be different, but if those spots suck i'll go back to in front of door handle. car is getting repaired for a week and a half though, damn tahoe backed into me

Sedans have a mirror plug behind the sail panels, so you can't flush mount one. Surface mount is the only way, or cut up the door panel and put it there.

I surface mounted mine so I didn't run into any trouble. I just had to be careful not to pinch any wires back there when I snapped the sail panel back on.
i didnt like the way the EX speaker pods were mounted on the car. It wasnt really a great fit, and I just didnt like the way it looked. So, i mounted my inifiniti kappa tweeters on my door
. I think its a lot cleaner
