Which AWG wire is ok for a JL 500/1?
I'm running a JL 500/1 to 2 MTX 8000 DVC 12" subs. I believe the amp is 1,500 w max. I currently have an 8 AWG Monster copper strand wire running off of the battery (from a previous amp) that leads into the trunk. Can I use this wire to power my new amp? or is 8 AWG too thin to handle all that wattage?? I know I'll need to upgrade to a 60 amp fuse right?
And #2, my MTX 8000s, their rating is 400/800, will standard 16 gauge wire be fine? or should I use 8 AWG??? Thanks a bunch!

Yes definitely stick with 4awg minimum. Otherwise if you're running a distribution block, it's okay to run 8 as long as the wires aren't longer than a foot or two to the amp.. But definitely 4awg from the battery to the distribution block. Otherwise, just stick with 4awg. It's just easier to be on the safe side.. I even used 4 awg on my 250/1

thank you. everything is installed.. doesnt hit as clean as i thought it would, then again, i dont know how to tune an amp. could you guys suggest some good eq settings, gain, etc for my JL 500/1? also maybe it doesnt hit too hard cause i'm using 8 AWG power wire? My friend has these same subs w/ a less powerful amp and they hit a bit harder.

A good start for tuning would be to read through the tutorials located here:
www.jlaudio.com
they have sample system setups as well, and they also have a guide to tuning the 500/1
I can go and write down my settings off my amp (I run a JL 500/1 also) but being as you have different subs, you'd want to tune accordingly (to their specs/frequencies).

things to try:
move box
face box a different way
lower the bass boost (on amp and turn bass down on HU)
lower the crossover setting
drop the rear seat when you don't have passengers (try it once and you'll know why
