Quick sub question?
Quick sub question?
I am looking for either one or two subwoofers. My original plan was to get two 12" subs but the funds are no longer there. I am now thinking to get two 10" subs. If I get two subs however I am going to have to get less of a sub. If I get one sub I can get a better sub but only one of course.
Is it worth it to get two lesser subs or just one good one? I am looking in the 10" and 12" range and want to spend under $200. Any suggestions?

I have a $100 infinity sub that hits hard. Used to have two of them, but it was really too loud and heavy for the car. I think you'd be happy with a good single 10 inch sub. Just make sure you match the amp so it's not underpowered.

yea there's a big difference between hearing speakers/subs in the store, and then hearing them once they're hooked up in ur car. i'd say go with kicker. my friend had 4 aftermarket speakers and one 10'' kicker sub in the trunk at it was bumpin. no amp either. buy an amp also tho cuz the sub is only like $60-$70
Personally, I would get one 12 over two 10s. Less room, better low end, and it would be about the same amount of sound. I have two Kicker Comp VR 12's. Its enough, but of course I want more. But yeah, I personally recommend Kicker, but Alpines seem to sound really nice as well.
I've been starting to look at the Kicker's now - I think I'm going to go with one sub though. 2 subs is going to be a little much for me. Not sure 10" or 12" - I'll have to hear it first. The original plan was to get Rockford's but I've heard that their lower/cheaper line of subs isn't so great anymore - How are the cheaper lines of Alpine and Kicker?
The Kicker Comps sounded pretty good: Kicker Comp 12
As for the Alpine E line, I've never heard them, but Alpine is a good brand so I'd imagine they are pretty good: Alpine E 12
The Alpine I've heard is the R series, it was really tight and clean, I liked it a lot, I've considered switching to these: Alpine R 12
What I current have are the Kicker CVR 12's. They hit really hard ( I have 2) its not the tighest bass, but it shakes everything in the area when its turned up. I'm a big fan of Kicker subs, so I'm biased.
Kicker CVR 12
But basically, you need to hear a few different things and see what sounds like what you want. Some are really sound but not tight, some are tight but not loud, some are a good mix. it all depends on what you're going for. Also you need to make sure you get the right box (go with sealed) and an amp that will power your sub(s). If you hear someone with what you think you want, just ask them what they have. Most people take it as a compliment.
Otherwise you have to go to an audio store and listen to the different ones, and as someone else mentioned, its a lot different sounding in your trunk. But, if its your only option, then its better than nothing.

The Kicker CVR 12's will are cheap enough that I could get two! No place in my immediate area sells them so I would probably just get them from crutchfield. I do want to look at the Alpine Type R b/c a friend of mine has one and likes a lot. I would be willing to spend the $$$ if it's as good as everyone says but I would obviously only get one. I've heard the Type E sounds pretty good too! Not sure - one Kicker CVR 12 at around $90 from crutchfield would save me a lot of $$$. Thanks for the input!

I was just looking at hookedontronics.com and I've never seen prices like that before... does anybody have any comments on whether or not this site is legit?
i would go with two 10's from kicker in a sealed enclosue if it were my car. but then again..it's not. find some people that u know and try to listen to th systems i their cars and decide what u like. otherwise ur gonna have to put up with the guesswok at the store. try going to best buy. they always have helped me in the past. the people that they put in the car audio area of the store are always on the up and up. they alway seem to have the latest gear in stock and for very good prices. keep us posted.
Hmmm - those prices are the best I've seen. I don't think I'm going to order anything more than I would if I bought it at a regular price though. I would probably just bask int he savings and save the extra cash for some other work.

yea im debating about downgrading to 1 12", save some trunk space and possibly cut some rattling, but thats along with tons of other things I "think" about doing, if I do get another sub it'll be from Hookedontronics thats for sure.

about the post regarding best buy: my amp i paid $250 for on sounddomain was sold for 350+ at best buy, I never saw a price drop and now they have the new models. My first setup I had a factory converter since my concorde had premium sound and they sold me a 360.2 (bridged it runs 180Wx2) and they sold me Punch Z's, 90W rms ea, good thing they sold me the warranty too (running double the rms isnt the greatest of ideas), I've had better experiences at Circuit City, but it all depends on the skill of the employee.

Just came back from Circuit City and Best Buy. I made my rounds listening to just about every sub in the store. At Best Buy I focused on the Rockford's and found they were kinda muddy and not accurate - the P3's were good but not in my budget. I then moved to Circuit City where I received much better help from a sales rep - turns out they were selling the Type E's for $82 each (12") - just about the same price as crutchfield so I'm getting them at Circuit City. It looks like two 12" Type E's - or maybe just one 12" if I want to save some $$$ and trunk space. They also had a lot of open box infinity stuff and was going to discount them. He was also giving me a good deal on installation - he was giving me free HU install - 50% of 4 speaker install ($40?) - and I believe sub and amp install for $60. So all in all I found my trip to Circuit City very successful!
The set-up looks like this so far:
- one or two 12" Alpine subs
- 4 Infinity 2-Way Reference or 4 3-way Pioneer (6 1/2")
- Infinity 4 Channel INI 7540A Amp
- Unsure of the sub amp though
- Alpine or Pioneer Headunit
As far as rears go - what 6x9's fit?
Any suggestions for a good sub amp and 4 channel speaker amp?

Do you already have the Infinity 4-chan? If not, I would get a monoblock sub amp instead. If so I would bridge it and run your sub(s) off of it until you can get a proper sub amp.

Here are some suggestions, and you won't blow the bank on them, but they produce good quality product:
www.adireaudio.com their shiva line is a good budget woofer. another option is the brahma, also a good woofer.
www.edesignaudio.com elemental designs Kv2, Ov2 and A series.
www.imagedynamics.com image dynamics IDQ series is a good cheap woofer. the IDMAX sub is one of the better competitors with the JLW7 line at a budget friendly cost.
www.respl.com resonant engineering, also make good product
www.treoengineering.com treo engineering, another budget friendly company that still make good product
www.diamondaudio.com yet another good manufacturer that makes good product
that was some manufacturer direct sites where you could browse for different products they offer, and take a look at specs, etc. Here are some sites that are distrubutor based (sell more than one brand)
www.thezeb.com
www.ikesound.com
www.sounddomain.com
www.onlinecarstereo.com
www.etronic.com
www.woofersetc.com
www.infinitecaraudio.com

Yeah - how's elemental designs - I was talking to a friend and recommended a whole line of their products. He said it would be the best bang for the buck. Kinda unsure though - I've never heard many other people mention them.
I've got to say that in my opion Kicker is the best. I'd go with a 10 or 12 in. solobaric L5. I've got a 12 in. L5 and it's loud. It pushes more air cause it's square instead of round. and I bought a Sound Storm Force 500.2 amp for about $120. The solobaric cost me about $150. thats my opion!
