I redid my amp enclosure yet again (5th time), and relocated it. During the process, I evidently bumped some of the dials or filters or something, and now something;s not right. It's clipping at low volume now. My HU volume dial goes to 60 (0-60 increments of 1), it used to not clip until around 52, now, it's clipping around 16. It wouldn't be all that bad if my highs and mids weren't drowned out by the lows at the volume, but they are. I'm running a JL 500/1 sub amp to my single 10, and 350/4 for my comps. None of the dials on the 350/4 got messed up (that amp didn't move, so dials weren't touched. But, the sub amp is clipping awfully low. I have everything wired up right, and I've been turning dials, and changing filter settings for a couple of hours now (beer and amp tuning evidently are a bad combination for me). So, I'm leaving it as is till tomorrow. So, if any of you could give me some recommendations as to how to get it set back how it was, muchos grassy-*** to ya.

Is it settings on the deck, not the amp. I assume you had the power cut off.

Otherwise maybe a bass boost switch or something.

No, its the amp. I remembereed to write them all down on the HU, so when I reconnected power, I'd be able to fix it quickly. I just didn't think to write them down for the amp. I'm at work right not, but when I get home, I'm gonna go write everything down, then come back in here and let you nkow what's what. I'll probably get on JL's site, too cause I can't seem to remember which switch does what at the moment.

Here's what I got from JL, any input on bettering the SQ?

Infrasonic Filter: ON
Infrasonic Freq: 30
Q: 1.6
Center Freq: 60
Boost: +3 (might tweak a little higher)
Bass EQ: ON
Amp LP Filter: Mode: 12db
Filter Freq: 80
Input Voltage: High
Input Sensitivity: Dial Horizontally Flat
Signal Sensing: ON

Does this sound anywhere close to anywhere it should be set?

i might drop the boost levl and up the gain to compensate.

also might consider droipping the filter frequency from 80 to 70ish.

both of these will drop the bass volume dramatically, which you can bring back up by gaining up.

otherwise, id leave everything alone. once your settings are as they are, or maybe between what htey are and what ive reccommended, try playing with the gain alone.

if you cant get the gain right, try flipping the input voltage switch from high to low and regaining the amp.

to gain the amp, easiest way is to zero the gain then volume up till just before the mids distort, then gain up the sub till its at a level you like.

thats probbaly the route id take. the rest of hte settings look pretty good. maybe lowering center freq from 60 to 55 or even 50, but yeah, looks pretty good for hte most part. nothing its set to now (maybe gain input voltage or gain level) should cause hte amp to prematurely clip

happy tuning! let us know if it doesnt work out

Well, I finally figured out what was clipping it, and I did tune to those levels rabbit. The problem was when I turned on the Bass EQ. For some reason, it was making it clip early. I have no clue as to why this is, but that's what was making it do it. So, I turned it off, and now all is good. And I'm back to banging. Course I might get a new sub or two now, along with another 500/1 depending on which sub(s) I choose. I had a bunch of equipment lying around, and sold it all but the current setup last month. I'm trying to make all the extra money I can right now, so I can pay off the civic quick, then, I'm gonna pay off the bike a couple of months after that, cause I need a truck now for some other things I'm gonna be doing. And I don't want to touch my savings or mutual funds right yet. But, I have found me a 2001 Avelanche Z-71 Northface with 25,000 miles for a whopping $14,000. (Friend's dad works at a Chevrolet dealership, abd they got it cheap at an auction last week, he's giving it to me for 700 over what they paid for it).

Turning off the Bass EQ bypasses the center freq, boost, and Q settings, so they are not in use anymore. Perhaps there is a problem with the EQ in the amp that is causing it to clip when turned on?

My 500/1's are set with the bass EQ on, center at 45hz, boost at +8, and I forget the Q setting, but its more toward the narrow end.

I don't know what was causing it to do that, but when I turned the bass EQ off, it stopped. Don't get me wrong, when it was on, the sub was pounding, but, once you got up to around 30% volume, it started clipping really bad, and once you turned the dial to about 50% volume, it was beginning to get ugly. I don't know, I've never experienced this phenomena before. Regardless, I'm gonna keep playing with it some to see if I can make it work with the Bass EQ on.
