For some thump I would get some Kicker Comp VRs (12s or a 15). For better SQ, some ID 12s.
For a good mix of SQ and SPL, some Adire Shiva or a Tempest.
A lot of people like Alpine Type Rs.
Usually cheaper subs are easy to audition at audio stores because they are readily available...take a trip to a few audio stores (even maybe places like the Good Guys, BB and CC) and pick some subs that you can live with and that you like.

If looking for cheap subs, I would say - Pioneer TS-W305C's
... cheap as hell and sound great. You can get 2 of 'em for right around a bill. I've used Pioneer subs for years.

I just bought an IDQ 15" for $60. deals are abound to those whom look and are patient. lots of good stuff out there for the taking!
another great cheap subwoofer is the orion HCCA. can take 600 rms and gets DAMN loud, and can be found on ebay occasionally for $150. its a single 12 that will outhit every 10, 12, or 15 mentioned on this page! some of them, the hcca will outhit a pair!
edit: tempests are absolutely awesome, and hard to beat for $100 each. shiva can be found cheaper. I love them to death, but they require big boxes, so if you don thave the space, look elsewhere. think of the tempest as a finicky type R that will own the R if installation care is taken.
if youd prefer to throw something together and hope it sounds good, id go with the R's, VR's, or pioneers. all are much more box forgiving, and will sound equaly lackluster
in almost any box.

I say the Elemental Designs K series, like 75 each, pound like whoa, take a lot of power, and have CARBON FIBER CONES.

Want cheap? Go with Sony Subs. Reason #1 Sony makes too many things, they couldn't possibly make good subs.
Want Inexpensive subs, set a price range. Than you can go from there. Than we could throw out ideas with prices.

don't they use nomex now? well either way.. eD subs, IMO, equal to pure ownage. Haven't had the chance to listen to any of the K-series or even the newer Kx's (only listened to their top-of-the-line A-series), but i've heard lots of good things about the k/kx-series.

no disrespect to eD, but they are the biggest example of "riding another person's ****" ive seen in years...
i still have my doubts about flat cones, i still have my doubts about the quality of their subwoofers, and i just have doubts, period...

what do you mean by "riding another person's ****" (btw.. is the blanked out word ****?)? Well from personal experience, i've learned to love the sound of the A-series. they can hit extremely low notes (i think they tested it to hit like 8-9hz in a sealed box), dont need too much power, small box, pretty cheap compared to its competition. I'm actually saving up for 2 e12a's right now. but that'll still be a while. but maybe you could convince me to get a diff pair of subs, ludlam?
edit: Ludlam, i'm not trying to argue with you or start a conflict, just want to know if i might be making a mistake in buying them.

does anyone have an edA in the bay area to central california on teh coast?
i hear so much trash talking abotu the A series, oh its so great, its so clean, its so loud, blah, blah, blah.
it sound slike ****. ive never heard one sound good. it cant take power. it doesnt get loud. its poop.
noone I know has ever been in teh presence of a well performing edA.
my buddy with a max spanked the guy running a pair of edA's
does anyone live on the coast of california who is willing ot let me demo their A? id like to hear one that supposedly sounds good, to see where this justification is coming from that this woofer is so great.

can you get down to orange county? if so, you can have a tour of the e12a or the e15a, whichever you prefer to hear. Both are different animals.

to you GSteg... I want to hear an e15a =(. What're you powering your subs? and how're they set up (box size and stuff) well not mine, but my friends'. One of them has an e12a and the other has an e15a. the only k-series i had are the "e" E15k. I do have the w7 and idmax though. I could also bring along my friend's brahma. Kinda fun when you take everything to the back of a circuit city installation bay, to see the face expression of their customers.
I have access to many subs.
P.S, if you know anyone that needs subs, tell me. lol. need to get rid of a few in my collection.

wrote a reply earlier, but server ate it. socal is out of my way, but if you have access to the woofers, and noone else seems to, id love to plan a trip down sometime to take a demo. just a matter of finding the time and multiple excuses to travel.
ill keep trying ot remind myself of yoru offer, and if it is good, then when I have time to go down, hopefully youll be free too
and we can meet up and have some lunch, and **** off some parking lot loiterers
if we are really lucky, we'll get the west coast distributor of stereo integrity there so we cna direct compare the SI magnums along with the w7, max, and edA's ;p
ill be in touch if my memory holds.

ive seen every one of those subs bust through the cone. the conical shape gives it MUCH more stability and force to strengthen the cone.
