OK guys I need help, I can't wrap my head around this problem.
Setup:
JVC KD-SH99 deck, directly powering JL Audio VR600CSi compos in front and JL Audio VR600CXi coaxials in the rear, amp out to Visonik VX900D digital mono amp powering an Adire Audio Brahma 15" sub in the trunk
Problem:
As I was modding my car I had the CD player on for about 15 minutes at REALLY low volume (for the first time ever my volume was actually lower than 20), and at that point i noticed a whirring noise coming from the rear. I popped the trunk and stuck my head in and I can't really tell, but my best guess is that it's comin from the rear coaxials and not the sub. It sounds like a cat when it's just purring all low-pitched. Now here's the thing, I can sort of hear the sound when the music is on (but at low volume, or if there's a break in the music). But I'm sure the sound is there all the time regardless of volume because if I switch to an inactive source like LINE IN or DVD it's there as well. It does not increase with volume setting but is definitely not there when the volume is 0. From volume 1-40 it's there, but never gets louder. And it only comes on when the car is set to ON. When the key is on ACC, I don't hear it regardless of volume/source/etc, almost like it's a component that starts up with the engine that makes this noise. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be? It's not that bad cause I usually drive at a moderate level (or way higher) and it's not evident when the stereo is up loud, but I'm just the littlest bit paranoid that something may be dying on my car.

i think one of your speaker wires is touching the chassis. otherwise, you have a bad ground/connection elsewhere. moving wires around will probably solve it, or you may want to reground your HU directly to the chassis.

They're currently not wired to the HU in any way nor were they on when I was diagnosing the problem. I think that's true tho - they can interfere with electronic stuff - my buddy wrecked his srs sensor that way.
Also, if you have wires running under your rear seat around the fuel pump you can get noise that way. As soon as you turn the key it will get power and prime, and if you have wires around there, they will pick up noise from it.

Found it - a ground point under my hood had rusted. So I jus took my lil wire wheel and hooked it to the drill.....bzzzzzzzzz.....done. No more whirrrr......
Anyone got any ideas on rustproofing this ground point without killin its conductivity?

put that grease stuff on it... the name is slipping me right now but if you go to radio shack/auto parts store and ask for the grease for electrical connections they'll know what it is.
