While we're on the subject of RAM air...

On cars that come with stock ram air scoops, how is it setup? Usually (always?) the scoop is on the hood, right? So air comes in and I assume it is then brought to the intake system somehow. How do they keep water and dust and dirt and rock and bugs and stuff out? I assume the small things are taken care of by a filter, but what about really small things? For example, what if you drove through a really dusty constuction site? Or if you were following behind someone on a gravel road (you know how their cars always kick up dust and stuff)? Or what if it's raining? Some of the rain is bound to get inside the filter. Or what about when it snows and you have snow on your hood. How does it keep it all out?

Thanks.

And I'll give you mad props if you make an illustration with Paint to help illustrate your point.

check out the frontview in my gallery i just posted. its not a scoop, but a "ghetto intake" what i did was remove most of the stock airbox, replace the filter with a k&n one, and for smaller road dirt, used a tea ball in the assembly before the aem water valve. a tea ball is a device to put tea in and steep and you can get them at coffee shops and department stores. ill have engine and interior pix up soon. i actually removed the left side yesterday, and for the winter, i will probably just disconnect the assembly so that cold air just blows toward the engine compartment and is not forced into it. i also just clean the filter as if it was set for off road use. the front of the intake is 2.5"(i think), so the volume isnt amplified as much as a hood scoop would be except for the angle of the front bumper, but i would imagine that any type of screen for patio windows would have a similar effect and is cheap and can be easily cut to fit into the front of a hood scoop. if you are afraid of larger debris, you could also layer gutter guard in front of the screen mesh.

Well I am not going to make a picture or anything but the basic idea of ram air is to "force" air to go into the engine at a higher compression than normal so kinda like a turbo or supercharger compresses the air, ram air just does it naturally. Imange taking off the top of your stock air box and just leaving the filter exposed, that is basically how ram air sits with the hood scoop just feeding the filter with air. I remember reading somewhere either here or clubsi.com that inorder for ram air to acutally work it would take a car travling at like 150+MPH or something like that but I don't remember. Oh and the real little stuff gets filtered out by the filter just like it does on your cold air/sotkc box/ or short ram. The little stuff gets to all of thoes as well.
