You'll lose too much back pressure and bog off the line & even stall out in some cases. This kid locally has a civ & thought he would be cool & put 2.5". He didn't like the sound it produced with the Ricer APC muffler he had, so he did 3" & the car almost wouldn't run unless it was @ almost 2500 RPMs......LOL.....
Intakes have also been known to give negative HP (depending upon motor). With an intake you are going to lose low end torque without a question. You will gain it back in the higher RPMS though.....just build you car with consistency. If you wanna focus on the higher end RPM band then get a CAI & str8 thru exhaust like the N1 or Tanabe...if you want low end, then get a little more restrictive cat back like the DC TCS or A'PEXi WS......
doesnt tanabe have 2.5" piping and didnt u say not to go 2.5"

what is this stupidness about, "i want my intake and exhaust to be sooo loud, that it pisses people off so they call the cops....."

you know there is noise ordinances that state your vechicle cannot produce noise above 93 dmls? do you people like paying tickets? you should look for performance intake, performance exhaust,......not the loudest thing you can find......dumbasses.......you guys are like the stupid kids i went to school with....looking for the easy way to make your car cool, sacerficing performance for looks.....what a waste of money......

ok king let me tell u this, i live in atlanta georgia where about every other civic, or mustang, or anything is incredibly loud... cops dont care and on my old integra i had marietta cops looking at it and giving me complements, and if u would read what i said, i stated that i dont want to be ricey and i want performance, i want good sound and performance. and if you cant respect the fact that not all people on this forum want their civic to be exactly like yours than you dont deserve to be a member!

edit: hey king - 93 decibals not decimals.... and most cops arent going to pull out there sound meters. and daily driving is totally different then revving real high and whatnot. if you drive smooth and at low rpms, its not going to be near as loud. just my $2.00

Talking my two and a half cents...

now this may sound weird to most every1 viewing this post but i will continue regardless...(3 phases so fa)

phase one---the BEFORE purchase setup.... i bought the car in december 02 with some ugly *** YELLOW--my EX is red--short ram jerry-rigged intake piping. matter of fact, the intake piping scratched and make indentations in my hood so it was QUITE apparent that it was homemade. as for *cough cough* exhaust ...LMAO!...it had a 3" exhaust tip prolly from the owners local Discount Auto!! needless to say that had to change. conclusion??--everything sucked!! lol

phase two---the AFTER purchase setup.... i bought an AroSpeed muffler from a friends shop--Top Gear Performance--and got it installed. latr finiding out about the stock resonator, i got that removed. the sound got a lil better but still ricey and cheap for sure. no intake change yet. conclusion??--i got the look, but the sound is straight-up *** sounding!! lol

phase three--the CURRENT setup.... i won an AEM Cold Air Intake System in powder-coated red from this past Spring Break TUNER BASH in Daytona, FL. i installed it and was semi-happy. great looks and great deep scurry sound b/t 4000-5000rpm. finally, i was on this site once i had found it. registered and fooled around for a bit. stumbled upon the eBay sale stuff bar. i went crazy and signed myself up and bought some stuff. one of the items was this~~> MeganRacing N1-style 4" muffler. now i kno what ur thinking. ebay sux when it comes to car parts...but i was pleasantly pleased with the quality, sound...and not necessarily the performance. it was 53 bucks shipped and i installed it immediately--once i found a mechanic in orlando that actually welds..not BOLT ONS!! ewww... anyways, for 85 cash i got axle-bak piping and the MR installed. to this day i swear IMO this setup sounds muuuuch better than the 650 dollar real APEXi N1 cat-bak system. odd but tru. i think APEXi looks great but sounds RIIIIIIIICE!! mine is nice n deep to medium loudness with a good tone. not too high not too low. Juuuuuust right! hehe.

so in conclusion, i recommend for an EX, this setup.

$250 gets u an AEM Cold Air Intake System
$49.00 plus s/h off eBay gets u a MeganRacing 4" muffler + a double-silencer if u ever feel the need to be a creeper and sound all stock n ish! hehe

$0 for intake install if u can read directions...included or DIY w/e u like
$??? for stock resonator removal
$50-100 for muffler installation...and in my case, axle-back piping too!

hope this helps even tho theres ALREADY 3+ pages of opinions...peace and good luck in your selection!!

i didn't say that it(aem v2) was not a performance intake......i just said it sounded like, "weeeeeeeee,neeeeeeeeee,neeeeeeooo......" ha, ha, ha, ha!! as civics go, i don't want anyone to have a civic near close to mine!! i like my civic to be different than anyones, that's why i usually have custom pieces made for my application, i'm not trendy, i like a quiet, fast car, not a loud, stinky car! and don't make fun of my spelling, i type fast and make mistakes!!
also, don't tell me were i belong! your not my dad, and i come here to learn about things that i may not be aware of, concerning my civic 'corse......

Why does everything always turn into a pissing contest on these threads?? This is seriously like a virtual street race. Everybody thinks they got the coolest, fastest, latest parts and knowledge and they're so quick to hit the gas and show everybody what they got. Sorry for getting defensive before. Thought I'd join the ranks for a while. Not worth it. You obviously know enough about performance parts and what you're looking to get out of them, so go to it.

If you notice in my first post on this thread, I said it is comparable to the 5zigen Fireball (straight through design, angled up and out) and comes with the silencer, but if you want loud, you'll prolly take it off and never put it back on, like me. I've heard Tanabe, Apexi, DC TCS and a slew of other exhaust systems. Can't say for sure if I've heard a Greddy EVO cuz' it's not easy to distinguish one from the other just by driving next to someone. But whatever, the Tsudo is plenty loud man. And many friends of mine could tell a noticable difference in performance BEFORE I had the intake and header installed. And it is a whole lot cheaper. Unfortunately, too many peeps think cheap means crap. I was one of those people until I just went with it and was amazed when I drove away after the install. I've seen it go on Ebay for as low as $240, but I went legit through Nopi.com and it came to be $313 shipped. Still pretty cheap! And you can choose between the Apexi N1-style or the Fireball. I think they even come stainless now, so that helps. Mine isn't stainless. Ugh, anyway, man, hope you get what you want. Oh, and to answer your question on the "Header" thread, I'm pretty sure you can get the HP shorty if you just want to stay legal, but not sure what gains are like. I just threw down $200 bucks to some kid in Columbus selling his Civic for the whole Header, downpipe and hi-flow cat brand new!! So I couldn't pass that deal up. Good luck!

Tanabe is not a performance exhuast its a NOISE exhaust (if that is such a thing) It is 100% street legal... If you wont performance you go with Skunk2 or Aphex N-1 or HKS

How the hell is Tanabe noise exhaust ? Am I the only one to whom Tanabe is quiet ? I dont think you know what noisy exhaust is my friend...Tanabe is extra quiet, loud only on downshifts.

If anybody has Skunk2 sound clip post it up, I wanna hear how does that exhaust sound.

Ummm, my friend has the Tanabe on his 2k2 EX...It's way louder than I would want and he's about to sell it because it's annoying, and it isn't a better performance exhaust with our cars because no matter what exhaust you get for the D17a engine, your not going to get anymore performance than any other exhaust out there. If you want a exhaust that is deep and not loud, but also want "performance", go with the Apexi WS or DC TCS. They sound the best out of all the ones I have heard for our cars yet. This is just my opinion though.
