Car stopped moving, what is this part?

Side view, located on the passenger side between the motor and the firewall on the under side.

Car won't pop into gear and it sprayed a bunch of yellowish/brown gunk everywhere.

2009 Hybrid.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Re: Car stopped moving, what is this part?

See where the shaft of this axle sheared apart (broke in half)? There was a rubber damper or ring strapped to the shaft there, it trapped water and rusted the steel...

Check the other axle shaft for the same rubber damper problem. If it hasn't been replaced already, consider replacing that axle before it breaks and strands you.
