High Fuel Consumption

Hey just wondering what kind of milage you guys get in your civics with mostly city driving. I noticed recently that I have a hard time to get it below 11L/100KM. Yes I know its how you drive but I do drive like a grandma barely any rabbit starts and sudden stops. It just seems recently it has been extremely on the higher end of consumption before I would get 8.5-9L/100 KM maximum but thats like driving like NASCAR and be 7.0ish driving like a grandma.

Re: High Fuel Consumption

Keep tires properly inflated
Inspect intake air filter and replace if needed
Some sites I've read related info on say to replace o2 sensor after 100k miles as maintenance.
Inspect spark plugs. Check gap. Replace if needed. Around 100k miles for Iridium

Cold weather alone can kill gas mileage.

I was going to mention cold weather..except, I live in mid-west Florida so I probably don't know what driving in real cold weather is.

Re: High Fuel Consumption

Last couple weeks it dipped as low as -10F here.....
TODAY it got up to +60F. Bay doors wide open at work, no jacket, etc........

but it's been raining all day and it's now about +24*F (ice storm weather) and I haven't looked outside but it sounds like tree limbs have been bombing my roof for the last couple hours.
Tomorrows high here is supposed to be 27F, saturdays high 20. .

driving excessively slow also kills mileage.
40MPH forces me to downshift, push the throttle too much to keep it moving. Hate when people can't even keep posted speeds - kills my gas mileage.

Re: High Fuel Consumption

My gas mileage (strictly city, work commute) is around 29 MPG in the summer ...and right now it's somewhere in the 23-25 MPG range.

For most people, much of the cold weather fuel consumption increase goes into the extended times needed for warming up the engine. A cold engine WILL consume far more fuel than a warmed up engine, by design (and laws of physics).

Letting the car sit and run without driving also eats up fuel economy, you're burning fuel without going anywhere (zero MPG brings down the overall average).

If you were to fill the gas tank and go drive it for 300 miles on the highway your fuel economy calculation would still be pretty normal for highway mileage.

he have an older car, like everyone else, other than ezone, that are replying.

if you really want to know, mine used to get 46 MPG in the best one trip numbers (scan gauge) and around 36 average summer.
32 winter. but then, i take 70% highway commute and peruse the lift throttle to make the fuel injectors cut off cruise method.

Re: High Fuel Consumption

We could go into increased air density and aerodynamics, but that's a little extreme IMO.

I get around 7L/100km (33 mpg) normally, wintertime I'm getting over 9L/100km (less than 26 mpg)
