Speedometer Error

2005 Civic LX - 5sp manual

Speedometer erratic. Works approx 50% of the time. Or does not return to zero - may stop at 30 or 50mph indicated. Must rely on GPS for speed. Is it the VSS or the cluster itself?

Re: Speedometer Error

Connect a scanner to the diagnostic port.

Check codes. P0500 or P0501 in there?

No.

Display engine data.

Drive the car, see if the VSS indicated on the scanner matches actual road speed.

If it shows actual road speed on a scanner and it looks correct, then you probably have a gauge problem.
