I'd go for the Hankook Winter iPike, they have the best ratings and they're the least expensive.

The Michelin X-Ice Xi2 have the worst ratings, especially in snow and for treadwear. The only reason why they're so popular is the great commercials.

So I ended up heading down to the states to Discount Tires and picked up the Hancook iPike. Paid $100/tire - came to $436US. Didn't get charged any tax or duty bringing them back across. Going to get them mounted and balanced today! --- then just wait for it to snow lol.

Thanks for your help MindBomber!

Re: Urgent: Need help on snow chains vs. cables!

ive tried (also own) both sets of chains and the first one is the best. best traction, easiest to get on, and holds the tire tight...

....the 2nd one is ok, but it will slip off sometimes under hard/struggling acceleration.

just my .02

Glad I could help, now we just need to get a bit of snow!

They don't charge duty on auto-parts very often, not sure why, they're definitely supposed to.

I'm in Vegas, and I own cables, too.. Then again, I bought them when I lived in western WA. I still find use for them though, when I visit Brianhead or Mt. Charleston. I, too, am a big snowbaorder

Re: Urgent: Need help on snow chains vs. cables!

You guys both made a good point, cables are a great idea to carry in your trunk if you hit the mountains.

You can go hiking, to the beach and snowboarding all in one day in British Columbia. The beach might be a bit cold, but you can still go..

Re: Urgent: Need help on snow chains vs. cables!

Can anyone tell me with the wheel well clearance on a 2010 Honda Civic using 205 55 R16? I am trying figure out if class S chains will work on the front wheel drive. I live in the south and will only be going north for a week (family issue). I would like to have chains (just in case). As I recall from many years ago, chains allow more traction than cables. True?

Thanks for any help!
