axle stuck in the differential?
Whassup guys gotta question.
So I may buy this guys used tranny on the cheap. He claims that an axle is stuck inside the differential, and as such it of course doesn't work.
My question is, what the heck else may be screwed up in the process, besides the diff?
AND, they say they'll throw in the engine too for a total of 300 bucks...engine has a bad piston, as they put it.
So...worth a tear down an part out effort on the engine? I'll buy it all, if enough people show interest in parts...I planed on rebuilding the tranny with a new obx LSD an maybe some bearings an such...if the whole thing ain't shot.
BTW my trans right now sounds horrible...but still shifts smooth an seems to work fine?
Figured this would be a kewl project.
So yeah. Whatcha think?

Actually no, haven't thought about the fluid...
I mean, this sound is horrible...not very audible outside the car, oddly enough.
An I got no idea about this guy or his knowledge...gonna meet him in philly tonight...while strapped of course lol. Can't trust every Craig's lister!

Re: axle stuck in the differential?
so i picked up that tranny for 150...
Any ideas on how to get the damn axle out? i can try to post pics of it later..
Could I try and force out pins in the diff? Or are they locked in with threads?
I want to avoid attempting to cut it...besides, it appears that its pretty hard, thick steel...
Ideas?

Re: axle stuck in the differential?
I thought ideas were like a$$holes...everybody has them! lol...
So c'mon guys! What's the dilly, yo? I understand the lack of photos may stump people. I'm realizing my cell phone internet access can only do so much...maybe time to spring for REAL internet access on my computer Lmfao!
So in light of that, standby for pics...I'll try an upload some at work tomorrow.

Re: axle stuck in the differential?
I think you made a mistake. If the axle is stuck the only thing you can do is pry it out. If it is stuck you risk damging the seals and possible internal parts. I would have just saved a bit more for a good tranny.

Re: axle stuck in the differential?
Sounds like you got more money than moxie lol...a 'good' one as you say lists for over 500+ used condition...as in who the heck knows why it was pulled to begin with...I'd rather know what I'm buying no matter its present condition...

Re: axle stuck in the differential?
for 150 bucks the package, i would just take it apart with the axle in it and try to see what's sticking inside.
like said, it could be the ring is bent. or much worse. who knows?

Re: axle stuck in the differential?
disassemble the differential until you can see the tip/edge of the axle? Not sure if that is possible, though.
have you looked at this pictures from bomerman?

Re: axle stuck in the differential?
Hey!
So I got it all apart pretty easy, actually...First I pressed the diff bearing back into the housing..then I worked a pickle fork around gently on all sides of the axle, tapping it out with a rubber mallet. It came out pretty easy, once everything was aligned again (it had had been whacked crooked, pretty violently LOL...check out the pics:

this next one I think dude tried to punch it out with a screwdriver, through the middle of the diff..

And this is what happend to the teeth on the ring gear, from all the whackin on the axle:

I may unfortunatly have to replace the gear, accoding to the CEO of Synchrotech LOL...What does civicforums have to say about it? Replace? or ya wont notice..
And let that be a lesson to all those axle whackers out there...if its stuck, coax it out gently...this was not a time for the BFH, LOL.
Will keep ya'll posted on the progress....

Re: axle stuck in the differential?
replace - that's a part you don't want to take apart so oftenand might compromise the other gears and leave small metal inside the fluid.
Congrats for taking it out!
150 was well worth the risk!

Re: axle stuck in the differential?
but it wouldnt like, make noise, or wear parts, or anything? cause i could always just stick a big ol magnet on the drain plug...clean it every so often, that, in addition to the one already in there..damn ring gear is @150 itself...
And thank! yeah, 150! LOL

Re: axle stuck in the differential?
Yeah, idunno wtf im gonna do LOL...this project is kinda gettin sidelined unfairly cause...well, remember when my civic got scratched and I got 1200 bucks to spend from insurance? Well, I bought a new bike! LOL...I'll post pics soon...its freakin sweet, but I really gotta focus on ONE project at a time, and get this tranny workin again...have been in contact with synchrotech in CA...but they want a premium for parts...50 apiece for carbon synchros...then they say 'oh, well, we'll INSPECT it for OTHER things that need replacing' read: gonna charge an arm an leg for any little bullshit thing they find, so screw that.
I just need a cold, crappy, cant ride the bike day to start pressing parts off and git er done lol
