1992 Civic LX. Wierd problems!

Hey guys. I own a 1992 Honda Civic LX 4 door.

The car is used on pizza delivery, so a lot of stop and go, shut off-starting. It will run fine for several runs and then ill start it up, and it will puff a bit of smoke. Throttle response has to be very gentle for the RPM to go up, or the car will stall, it feels like the car is given too much gas. Then the throttle response will get better, but if u stomp it, it'll bog down. At the same time the IDLE will be high, at around 1500RPM and the gas consumption suffers. It will run like that for a while, the check engine light will come on after some time, usually when the car is at a high steady speed (highway), and then it runs fine... or not. When the car is shut off and started again, it can run perfectly... or it'll do the same.

I checked the codes and it gave me this:

1-Oxygen sensor
6-Water Temperature Sensor
7-Throttle position sensor
10-Intake air Temperature sensor
43-Fuel supply system

I know that one of those could thrown all those codes. I just don't know from which one to start... For sure, the TPS will have to be changed, because it does not affect the other. But everything else is related! I'm looking for advice from people who knows how civic behave. I'm a mechanic myself, and i just don't seem to get it.

Check air and fuel filters.Clean throttle body with carb spray. Then check fuel pressure.

Next

I would price all the sensors you are getting codes for. Then start replacing the cheapest ones first.

Clear the codes by removing the negative battery cable for at least 1/2 hour.

Spend $50 on a service manual and diagnose those sensors instead of spending up to $300 replacing sensors. It sounds like a dirty throttle body but, if there is any loss of fuel economy too I think you might have a bad cat- it's 18 years old and they all go bad eventually.

I have a service manual on my computer. The cat is fine, i replace the pipe in front of it last week because it was rattling inside. And the cat is solid and not clogged. I should start diagnosing the sensors, your right. I just have very little times and those things can take forever.

Maybe try appealing to the site and find one of these guys who lives near you and would come and do it for a small fee. I usually charge my friends all the beer I can drink and at least 1 meal. lol
