I have a 1994 civic ex. There are rust spots over either rear wheel, as is pretty common. It has rusted through the paint and I need to know how to stop it before I have a severe, expensive problem. So what are some thoughts on how to get rid of the rust and make it look respectable?

body shop is the only way to have it look nice and match the rest of the paint. needs to be completely sanded, primered, and paint/cleared.

Ah the dreaded honda cancer, ya this happens alot especially with the older hondas, the newer hondas they are trying to fix it. Supposidly they fixed it on the 7th gens but they still didnt cause my 02 si has it alittle.

The only way to completely fix the rust spot is to cut out the piece and weld another one on and sand it down, primer then paint.

Right but again I need both the spots above the wheel wells in the rear and the two front door body panels replaced, since rust is eating the doors from the bottom inside out and up. Maybe the bumper too, since the previous owner wrecked it.

I've got a small spot with some bubbling on the roof. I should probably get it fixed or else I'm gonna be dealing with a leaky roof.

Haven't noticed any elsewhere though, thank god.

I spent 10 years working in body shops and hate too tell you, but it would cost more than the car is worth to fix it properly.

The rust you are seeing is only the tip of the iceburg. Even with no rust and no dents, it costs several thousand dollars to give a car a good paint job.
That is why most rusted old beaters stay rusted and beat.

I got some 18gauge metal at the hardware store, cut it a little bigger than the rust hole and riveted it in a few spots, then took bondo and covered it all up. Some spot putty, let it dry real good, primer, paint, clear coat.
It's firm, the right color, and looks ok. Not perfect, but much better than having a hole in my car.

Replacement parts are the way to go for sure. You don't have to go honda replacement. There are some other good parts places out there, I replaced my whole front bumper/spoiler, passenger side fender, inner fender, pass side signal light for $130.00 with shipping. There was no fit or alignment issues.

Rivets are not allowed here in New Brunswick, Canada - everything must be welded. As for your rust spots: if they do not go all the way through, you could just grind them off and then treat / fill in and cover the area, and cross your fingers. Anything that has rusted through should be cut out or grinded away and new metal welded in (small holes might be filled with fiberglass). As someone else said, if you see a little bit of rust, it's probably just the tip of the iceberg, and unless the car is of great sentimental value or something, it's probably not worth the time and money needed to properly fix it.
Rust is something you have to constantly stay on top of or it will quickly take over. You should go over your vehicle every year, spraying penetrating oil in every body cavity, recoating any peeling undercoat, etc.... make sure every bit of metal inside and out is either insulated or lubricated in some way. Not surprisingly, this is more than most vehicle owners want to bother doing.

Anyone know what this might cost to fix. It's the top of the Civic del sol and those are the only rust spots.

i have some rear wheel well cancer on my coupe also. i hear fiberglass is better than bondo and lasts longer. what do you guys think? price diy?

No amount of body filler and paint on the outside will prevent rust from the inside popping through again. I used to drill a small hole to squirt WD 40 oil into the inside surface. Have to squirt it a few times a year. It won't fix the rust spot, just keep it from getting any bigger. The best time to start it is when the rust hole is very small.

I have the common rust on both my back fender lips. I have talked to multiple body shops, some will tell you 4 grand some will tell you 400 bucks. Thats how you know a good shop from a bad shop, anyway the 400 fixed it perfectly. Hope this gave you an idea.

Yeah, Not worth getting it replaced. I also have holes from my wheel wells into my trunk o.o Its baaaad. Lol. I just cut it out, sanded it down, Rustoleum spray painted inside the trunk & inside the fender, Patched the hole with some 1/8 thick steel. Tacted, grinded, Bondo'd, Sanded, Bondo'd, Sanded, Bondo'd, Sanded, Primer, Sanded, Primer, Paint, Clear coat... Doesnt look the best, But it deff looks better than a hole that allows you to see whats in my trunk o.o

Yeah Ebay has these panels for like 90$ a piece.

Hey, I'm 16 and I just got my first car, 1994 civic cx hatch, and it is dura-guarded along the whole bottom, but the common cancer on the lips has it down, my shop class gives me a discount on metal, and the welding is free with my own labour, now what do i need to do to replace the rused part of the fender, and what type of metal should i use? sorry i dont know how to post a forum of my own. thanks
