'93 Civic Problems- Idle Search, Vibration, and Whine from Engine.

I have a 1993 Honda Civic DX with the stock D15B7 and an Automatic Transmission in it. The car has 222,xxx miles on it and to my knowledge has the stock motor in it. I am having a few problems that I feel have small solutions, but I have run out of thoughts and am looking for some advice.

When the car is warming up, sometimes it will search for the idle (idle will raise then lower repeatedly). I do not have a tachometer on the car yet, but hopefully will be going to Autozone today to find out what I am idling between. I removed the IAC valve last night and cleaned it out with brake cleaner/simple green. I found this method on another Honda site, but the only thing I notice is a smoother search, if that makes sense.

My next problem is a large one. When I pull up to a stop light, I notice that most of the time, the idle is medium leveled and when in gear it feels like I am stepping on the accelerator (to say that there is a push (Reverse) or pull (Drive,# Gears) while applying the brakes. The stress caused by the push/pull while braking causes the car to vibirate and sometimes it will progressively grow and vibirate until the car stalls. I am more worried about this because it wastes gas because of the constantly higher idle RPM while stopped at a light and it feels like it is straining the drivetrain components.

My last problem isn't really a problem. My engine is noisy. Now I know you're thinking "dude, its a '93 with 222k on the clock... no ****!" but its not noise like that. Any time I accelerate, there is a high pitched whine/whir that comes out of the DS of the motor. It sounds similar to a loud supercharger and gets higher pitched as my RPM goes up. The only thing I can think it would be is an accessory driven by a belt connected to the crank, which doesnt narrow it down. Hopefully someone else has had this problem. I've heard it on a few other Hondas but its not fixed, so they obviously don't know. I don't mind the sound, but sometimes I just want a quiet ride.

for the last problem, its prolly a worn out timing belt tensioner. i know exactly what that sounds like (supercharger whine lol). as for the idle hunting, thats prolly a bad tps sensor and you should try and find a new throttle body to swap in since its cheaper and easier than replacing just the tps. make sure you get one for auto trans.

Hey thanks Gearbox. I only have experience with my Nissan 300zx, so forgive me, but why is the TPS more expensive than the TB and TPS? That just seems odd.

I didnt know a timing belt tensioner would make that noise. Thats weird. In your opinion/knowledge, do I need to replace this, or can it be left alone? I'm not good with timing at all, and I don't really want to fix if I dont have to, but I also dont want the belt jumping teeth and have to replace the head.

Re: '93 Civic Problems- Idle Search, Vibration, and Whine from Engine.

honda does not sell individual components, just the whole tb. the tps is made by an aftermarket company and costs $150 and requires proper calibration. a whole used tb is usually only $50 on ebay.

the belt tensioner probably wont cause any problem, just change it when the car is due for a new timing belt.

Is there a way to test the TPS to see if it is bad? I'd hate to buy a new setup just to find it doing the same thing. If so, what is the spec area (ohm, V)

How to I set the new TPS sensor. I was told 4.5 V and .5 V @ WOT. Where do I make needed adjustments?

Re: '93 Civic Problems- Idle Search, Vibration, and Whine from Engine.

Installed the new TPS. Readings come out at .53V at Idle and 3.46V at WOT.

The idle is really high. Probably around 2K.... I really need suggestions. If possible, it needs to be fixed tonight. My wife needs the car for the morning.

My test points are the red wire (center) and the battery ground.

Re: '93 Civic Problems- Idle Search, Vibration, and Whine from Engine.

Everything says .5 at idle and 4.5 at WOT.

I guess I should have tested the old one, but the ECU threw a code 7 so I automatically determined that it was a bad TPS. It's a 93, but I doubt its from the wiring. It seems to be in fair condition and isn't cracking.

Re: '93 Civic Problems- Idle Search, Vibration, and Whine from Engine.

My mistake. I did not have it in the correct notch. I reseated it and installed. I am still having idle surge... bad.

It idles fine and then when it runs for about 3 minutes it starts to surge. I am attaching a link to a video of the idle.

You have to download this one. Photobuckets video server says its down.

try to find a whole tb on ebay with the tps already on it and swap that in. its very hard to calibrate it otherwise.

Re: '93 Civic Problems- Idle Search, Vibration, and Whine from Engine.

Calibration was actually very easy. It took a slight of hand as well as about 5 minutes to get everything dialed in perfectly.

Anyone with even a basic knowledge of cars and an understanding of basic electronics can do this.

My main problem was finding a ground and creating the test point, which I did by inserting an unwound paperclip into the socket and wrapping it around my (+) test lead and then placing the (-) on the (-) battery terminal.

After that it is just a matter of very slightly moving the TPS clockwise or counterclockwise until you get the correct voltage at the idle position (closed) and then verifying that the WOT voltage is 4.5VDC

So after you adjusted the TPS then the surge went away?
