87 doesnt start
i need help
i have an 87 DX 5 spd. 116,000 its been sitting around for like 7 yrs and the alt. is rusted out.. doesnt move. belt broke. i think its got an oil leak. it turns over fine, but it just doesnt want to go. i tryed to roll start too. i pulled plugs to see if spark.. i dont see much. coil needs replacing? distributer? new plugs/wires? how much? i dont know if compression is any good. i can smell gas from carb. and i lost the bolts to the alt. anyone know where i can find new ones?
not a 'for sale' thread.. but im tired of messing with it, i paid 700
. its in Maine, with rust. offers anyone?

I would think it might be a fuel issue if it's been sitting around that long. I'm working on an Accord right now that hasn't been cranked in about 2yrs. Fuel is all gunked up. Can't hear fuel pump come on when the key is turned. If your's is fuel injected, make sure the fuel pump is working.
The igniter in the distributor was also bad. You should be able to pull one of the plugs out and hold it (Ground it) to the block safely somewhere and have someone else turn over the engine to see if you have spark. Then if you have spark, a small whiff of starting fluid in the air intake should tell you something. If it hits a few times, then it wants to run.....it's just a fuel issue.
Hope that helps,
Ed

Re: 87 doesnt start
~ no, my 87 is carburated.
thats some helpful info, when i get it towed to my friends house, i'll drain the tank/fuel system. then give it some carb cleaner.
i also tryed the spark plug trick, barely any blue spark. not sure if its cuz i dont have a working altenator (battery gets low) or if my coil pack needs replacing...
~ i dont have the compression tools to check. and i dont have money, yet. working on getting lisence back.
~ i still dont know where to find altenator bolts. i need info on that. anybody parting out theres? hard to find model, thats why i want to keep it.
