00 Civic Key

Hi All,

So I purchased a 2000 Civic for my son with just 158,000 miles and overall good condition. He s pretty excited and has seen all of the pics from when I had these cars back in the day. He is preparing his to do list as I type this lol.

One major issue I have with this car is that the key will not push in or return to position "0" and the key has to stay in the car all the time. For what he paid for the car I am not complaining at all. My concern is that he will be driving everywhere as teens do and I don't want it to be an easy theft for someone. I have tried many things and have listed them below. Am I missing something? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Steering wheel does not lock at all
Tried moving the steering wheel and shifter
Tried turning the wheel all the way left and right while jiggling the key
Tried placing (with force) into park
Disconnected battery (both + and -)

Car turns off but power still has power supplied to the radio. All of the keys we have are duplicates, no originals. I have not tried wd40 or graphite yet but not sure this will help anything.

Any thoughts would be great!

Re: 00 Civic Key

...was it stolen? lol

I'm pretty sure any honda before 2001 has no immobilizer, and since the keys are similar cuts, many honda keys/objects will start these early vehicles.

However those keys may not fit perfectly.

...........

But more likely the key or the ignition tumblers are worn or damages.

I'd try removing the ignition so you can get a better view of what is going on, then trying to remove he key.

If it will not come out, then I guess you will need a new ignition/key.

LOL, no not stolen.

I may just try taking it apart to get a better view. If I end up replacing the ignition lock do I need to do anything with the cars security after replacing?

Thanks!

Re: 00 Civic Key

See if the head of the key is hitting the housing when you try to push it in, preventing it from pushing in
