Sub enclosure issue!

Alright, so my sub stopped working the other day. No worries, it wasn't that great anyway, and I had planned to replace it!

Now, I have a problem. My amp was mounted in my sub enclosure, and I can't seem to get it out. Do any of you know how to get it out?

Also, what kind of amp is that? "Alpine ______". I need to know, because I have to find another amp the exact same size as that, to mount in it's place.

Now onto my final question: What would be a fair priced amp, and sub to replace these with?

I'd bet the speakers and amp were mounted on the board before the board was screwed to the rest of the box. I'd be feeling for screws all around the edges. Maybe peel the fur back to find screws.

The amp irks me. It looks like it's an Alpine v-power MVR-M500, but the mounting holes are missing. That, and it's very slightly different than every other m500 I've seen. Also, if the "Type-E" at the top left corner of the box is any indication of what sub used to be there (Alpine Type-E 10", I assume?), then it was being overpowered.

If that's the case, I'm willing to bet the amp still works fine, and the sub just blew. If you look at the amp, and straight to the right of where it says alpine, there's two lines of text, the bottom of which should be the model number.

If you could take a better quality pic, we'd be able to help you out a lot more. Take pics facing away from the light source (i.e. light source behind you). If it's a cell phone pic, it'll help with the graininess.

But... if you really want to replace the components, a price range would be good, instead of asking what a "fair priced" replacement would be. If your amp still powers up just fine and you feel like saving a buck, then I'd reuse the amp and find a sub that requires the same airspace as the sub you took out. For the Alpine Type-E 10", then that internal airspace is 0.6-1.25 cubic feet. Also, you need to take the mounting dept of the original sub into account. I'd hate for you to grab a sub and have it be much too deep for the box.

If you wanna replace the amp and the sub, you need to research a setup. You need to match them up with each other, as opposed to just tossing any old sub and amp combo together. Things to look for: RMS power rating, and at what impedance. I forgot what the difference is in how it behaves in a sound system, but I just remember a 4Ω amp would be better than a 2Ω amp. From there, you wanna compare the specs of the replacement sub. Make sure the RMS power of the amp is consistent with that of the sub.

Thanks for the input. If I were to keep the amp, what 10" sub would you suggest? My price range on the sub, would be no more than $200. I got this set used, for a real good price, so I don't really know what a good price would be.

Also, is the amp any good? This is the wording on the amp: Alpine V-Power Mono Power Amplifier MRP-M500. If I keep the amp, will I be able to get a good sound output from it?

The thing I find weird about this, is I have searched and searched, and I could not find an Alpine Type-E enclosure, that mounts both the amp, and sub. I am thinking it was custom made. Also, this is technically a truck box enclosure. It fits perfectly it the far back of my trunk, I love it

I will have more, better quality pictures, in a few hours. Right now, I'm off to the gym!

The cord on the left is what I normally use to hook up the amp. As I was looking in that hole, I noticed there was a cord tucked away. I pulled it out, and it is the cord on the right. What is that? Could it be the answer to my problems? lol

Here's my amp... What are everyone's thoughts? Is it decent? I like country music, so really, not a whole lot of bass being pumped through them :P

Ok, so I just went out to the car, and plugged the enclosure into my head unit. I just use the cord with a red and black end, that goes directly from my head unit, to the amp (I believe it's a VGA cord?). Now, once it was plugged in, I turned the car on, and touched a voltmeter to the two wires that go into the sub. I did not get a reading.. Could a fuse inside the amp be blown? I have read online, and reviews say that that particular amp just randomly turns off. What could the issue be?

Check the fuses in the amp, and the one from the 12V power that comes from the battery. Either of those could have blown.

The amp could shut off if it has overload or overheat protection. It could also turn itself off for low voltage input.

Thanks. How would I go about finding out why it turned off? If it is low voltage input, what could I do to fix that?

I will check the fuses when I get home. I need to get the amp out of the box somehow lol

Check the voltage input at the amp. Should be +12Vdc. Minimum to run your amp is 8Vdc but if your reading that then something else in wrong. If you don't then its the fuse that runs from the battery to the amp. If you do get voltage then It could be the fuses in the amp (should be located around the input terminal).

As for that cable you found, see if you can follow it to see where it goes. If that supplies voltage to the amp then that could be your issue.

I got the amp pulled out. I just had to pull that rectangle bezel out, and the mounting screws were behind that.

I labeled what my amp said all the wires were. So, if I run the VGA to my headunit, what do I do with the other one (the one I found tucked away)?

I have a bunch of fuses, so I'm going to go ahead and replace both on the amp, where would I find the fuse that goes to the amp from my battery?

Woo hoo! Problem solved.. turns out I'm retarded!

That cord that was tucked away, is supposed to go to my battery, and I wasn't using that. All I did was run a cord to my headunit.

I'm heading to The Power Center right now to get a power cord for it.

Now that I have it out though, I can mess around with it's settings. Here's a picture, what do you think I should turn the things to?

I listen to a lot of country also (and rock) and my bass boost is turned down rather low. Your going to have to adjust that **** until it sounds good (don't want to drown out the lyrics and guitar). The gain is set with a voltmeter and the LP (low pass) is set to the subs frequency range and the frequency that you want. I set mine to 50Hz. You use a test tone for this which can be found on YouTube.

Gain and frequency settings are part of a sub's specs.

Look at your battery and there should be a cable with a fuse close to it somewhere coming off of the positive post.

Yea, mine wasn't attatched at all to the battery, hence why it didn't work! I went out and bought an amp wiring kit. Took me about an hour to do, but just when I was finished, and hooking up the ground to my seatbelt bolt... This happened!

Don't know if you can tell, but it is raining a s*** ton! It went from clear skies, to black, in a matter of about 10 minutes lol. I'll finish the ground, and hooking the battery back up tomorrow morning. Then i'll get it tuned up!
