Sticky Throttle Cable
Sticky Throttle Cable
Hi Guys,
I have a couple of questions for people. I have a 96 DX Coupe with 250,000 kms and 5 spd tranny. My first question is that the check engine light is on, how would I check the code(s) without hooking up to a scan tool? The second question is the throttle cable seems to be stiff/sticky, I can't figure out whats wrong with it. When the car is off, the pedal moves fine. When the car is on and I'm driving, it seems stiff and then it seems to be fine the higher the RPM's go. I can't figure out whats wrong with it, hoping someone might be able to help me out.
Thanks.

Re: Sticky Throttle Cable
1. Go down to Autozone and have them read your code, it may still be stored. Autozone doesn't charge for scanning your car.
2. Check throttle cable for frays, nicks, kinks, etc.
3. Check your throttle cable freeplay, should be between 3/8"-1/2".
This is a pic of my '01 NOT a '96, but yours should look about the same. Check freeplay up near the throttle body about where my finger is:

4. If freeplay is out of spec, loosen the locknut:

5. Then turn the adjusting nut until it in spec:

6. There is also a locknut and adjusting nut behind the pedal too.

Re: Sticky Throttle Cable
EDIT: Was reading some more: If the throttle cable is in spec and doesn't bind, operate the throttle by hand and look at the throttlbody and check to see if the throttle valve and/or shaft are too loose or too tight.
