Huge metal shavings are what i like to see...
When changing my transmission oil (auto) I find not only tiny particles but huge shavings that looked like someone peeled an apple with the inside of my tranny.
I changed the oil and cleaned the SS's and the tranny shifts smooth and fine and has for 4000 miles still. Anyone seen shavings the size of a quarter and still had their tranny last them? i'd say there was 3 shavings the size of a quarter and the rest were small. Could this have been a never serviced tranny? and this is just the result of a 115,000 miles on it? I read its common for a break in period of a tranny to yield bigger shavings at first. Or is that wrong? The fluid was brown when it was changed by me right when i got the car and this is when i found the shavings. It now has 119,000.
Ive heard alot on tiny particles being ok, but big ones not...
So my question is this...am i just driving on borrowed time with this transmission?? If it still shifts fine and shows no signs of anything going wrong is this any indication of it still lasting at least another 50,000? or is that asking too much. Please post your experience with this if you've had a similar problem and when yours died. I need to know to save up money for a new one. I take it easy on the car but the previous idiot thought it was a race car AND never changed the fluid. (obviously bad news on an auto trans)

Sounds bad. I had the same thing happen on a ford it was not working well at all though.
Personally, I would wait until it fails or starts mis shifting or something, who knows how long it will last? Just keep the money saved for a new one/rebuild. maybee check the magnet in a couple weeks and see if it gets anymore shavings.

sounds like fluid was never changed. you get some shavings during the first 10-20k miles, but after that you shouldnt see anymore. the brown fluid is also a bad sign, as it indicated very old fluid that cannot do its job as well to keep the trans going. but if it shifts fine, i would say dont worry about it for now.

An inevitable answer i just had to hear from something besides reading. Making this post otherwise worthless : )Its basically a "wait till it dies" festival. Thanks for the input. Gearbox has practically fixed my entire car. Ha. You da manz.

well if you were slipping gears, i would say there is a problem. but those older honda trans (pre-2001) are really built to last. not like my 02 auto which started slipping at only 50k miles even tho i change the fluid every year. our abused 92 accord auto still shifts tight like new, and i think the fluid was only changed a few times.
