copy key and transponder poblems

I copied an ignition key for my 2k Civic at a hardware store and was OK about six times. Started the car. locked the doors etc. But after a day or so suddenly would not unlock the ignition. Still worked in the doors. Anyway way to get this copy key to work short of going to a Honda dealer for a new key?

A related question: I recently ordered a Honda transponder ( if that's the right term). I haven't programmed it yet because the instructions say programming the new transponder will mean the original one will have to be re-programmed. As the original ain't broke, I am loath to fix it, as the saying goes. I can see myself ending up with 2 transponders neither of which work. Advice?

Thanx

Mark

I am thinking the key was not cut right, sort of works sort of doesn't do you have an original key to make a copy from? if so I would go get another one made since they are cheap, also make sure they use the right blank length for your car.

As for the transponder typically you program them together, just follow the step be step instructions carefully and you should be fine. In the instructions they have program one and then like immediately you do the other.

Thanks. I'll try another copy. As for the transponder I'm going to be a coward and just go with the one we have. We have a second key which came with the car, seems to work OK without the transponder. it's ironic, the most trouble I've had with cars in recent years has been with the %%$##@ anti-theft systems. These are old cars that no one would want to steal.
