First time diy engine swap plzsend insights
ellllo everyone so here’s the dealio, I own a 01 civic five speed 1.7 which IS a VTEC , at 230k my timing belt jumped therefor bending one of my valves. So current day I purchase a new entire engine assembly , then I come to find out that this one I purchased IS NOT a VTEC, however it is the same at a 1.7,So broad question I know there is a lot to go about regardless when doing a enourmAs project like this , but do I have to gut all wiring that links to engine are there any wires or sensors I can leave in. I do plan on once I get it ready replacing alll baskets and overhead seals on my new engine once they come in the mail tom. Also do I need to have a VTEC head then to keep the VTEC running live and well like once before, is there anything MAJOR I missed or failed to mention that I need to do along the way or check in this very difficult but rewarding fix to my car ! Thank you to all in advance for help

any sensors in the block, you can leave in.
Yeah you do. The reason you have VTEC in the old block is because of the VTEC head. No VTEC head, no VTEC,. That said, if you don't have a D17A1 (1.7L non-VTEC) ecu, I guarantee that you that when you get it running, you're gonna be limited to 4000rpm. Your OEM ecu is gonna be looking for the VTEC system, which will be non-existent at this point, and it'll throw a P1259 code and throw your car into limp mode (hence, the 4000RPM engine cutoff point). Slight caveat though, if you get your hands on a D17A1 ecu and drop it in, your car won't start because your key wouldn't be programmed to that ecu.
Not gonna lie. It'd be easier to get a shop to recondition the head (recondition valve guides, deck the head, and maybe have them assemble the head with new valves) than swapping the engine to a non-VTEC engine. Just my opinion.

Rice boy thank you and mikey1 idk if I sound that unintelligent but there’s only one way to connect the manifold obviously so thanks but no thanks , rice is there any estimate you could give me on how much a shop would charge to do all that??

The one time I had a shop do that exact repair for me (my timing belt broke and bent all 16 valves), they charged me ~$1500. It was my dad's friend's shop, and he was supposed to give me a discount, but dude didn't. I could've done the job myself for half the cost.
For a VTEC to non-VTEC engine swap, I couldn't tell you. If you use a D17A1 ECU, cost goes up (due to price of the ECU and transponder programming), but it'll work better than trying to make your D17A2 ECU work.

luckily that’s what’s gonna happen the place said they had one that would fit my car so I do have have to just pay the difference as this vtech is about 150 more then the one I got, saying that it is a full engine assembly with all wiring harness so to start removing my old engine do you guys have like a general guide on where and how to start disconnecting everything inside engine bay and and do I bother even leaving anything in there? I know riceboi already kinda helped me out with a similar question but now that I know what I am getting will be right I feel like I wanted to address again, lastly I’ve read some things on how to tell all specifics of your car with the vin , that being said I have a 2001 2dr, 5 Spd, with the 1.7L vtec (that’s stock how I purchased it) I never received a owners manual from the seller to tell me the sub model, there are no power windows no sunroof um idk if there’s anything else I can describe to help determine this

Oh lawdy HX is the trim level....You need to check the engine code on the font of the block before you f with trying another engine, it may be tough to find a good D17A6 engine
I can't tell you what all the differences are between this car and others, and I can't say for sure a regular engine (D17A1, D17A2) would play nice with the HX (lean burn)ECM

Schematics used during head gasket repair
You're gonna have to tweak the aformentioned guides to include valve replacement, but those links are a start.

Remove cylinder head, send it to a machine shop to have valves replaced
Receive fixed cylinder head a couple days later, reinstall
