delay going into 2nd gear?

delay going into 2nd gear? i have an 02 civic ex 5-spd and i was driving home today and i put the car in second gear and i went to press the gas and nothing happened, no acceleration until i took my foot off of the gas and hit it again, and it was only like a second. it felt as if i had left the clutch in and hit the gas pedal but the engine didn't rev. as i was turning into my drive way the check engine light came on. i dont want to sink more money into this car than i have to but i just dont know if this was a one time thing or i need to get it checked out immediately. any ideas?
