Why do head gaskets blow?

Hey guys a couple days ago i had to get my head gasket replaced on my 01 coupe cause it kept over heating so i got it checked - apparently it was blown but the car was still running and pulling fine. Luckly no damages to the engine head. I just wanted to knw why it blew in the first place and how to avoid it. I hear its a common problem.. Ive had the car for 6 years now so I dont think its how i drive and i only redline it when i need to **** on ricers which can be often

Re: Why do head gaskets blow?

but in all seriousness, the short answer is: because it wears out. its a common problem among all older engines due to wear and tear. you cant prevent it.

question for you tho, how much did you get it done for, and how many miles are you at?

Re: Why do head gaskets blow?

could be wear and tear, could be you were driving on a very cold winter day with the temp dial on cold, then you drove the car til it was warmed up and turned the temp **** to hot, causing ice cold coolant to enter a hot engine.there are so many factors, but yes overall head gaskets seem to be a common issue with 01-05 civics. just very small clearances and over time something is bound to leak. im on my second gasket at 104k and already starting to burn small amounts of coolant. driving a car hard when the engine is not warmed up can also cause massive problems.
