any one ever paint there wheels ???
Re: any one ever paint there wheels ???
i couldnt agree more.
i mean lets say you charge yourself out at what...20$ an hour to yourself? if it takes you 5 hours to prep your wheels, thats like 100$ of time alone. if youre someone with a lot of time on their hands, i guess you can justify spending the time on it though.
but either way, i still think that you can get nice rims starting at around 300$ for a set of 4 if you really look around. most sets cost in the area of about 5-600 depending on what you want exactly. for the amount of work it really takes, its just not worth it. you have to prep it, supply the proper primer, paint, make sure you do a really good job, no runs, etc etc. and ontop of all of that, you might end up being able to tell it was done by hand.
it might be better to just spend a few hundred on a nice set of rims that you dont have to do any work for, plus they will come with a warranty, plus theyre brand new, plus they look good and not like you did them at home. up to you.

Hey i hope this helps you. i painted my 02 (00SI rims) almost a year ago. all i did was sand down every surface your going to paint. make sure u get it good cause this helps the paint stick to the rim. i did mine in gunmedal.. did about 3 coats and another 2-3 coats of clear coat. it took me a few days but i had my summer rims on my car at the time.
good luck!
this is what they looked like when they were new

and this is how they look after one New england winter and my most recent car wash.

i painted by 05 special edition wheels like a mat black color i'm not a big fan of spray painting wheels but i was bored i was surprised how many good comments i got for them. ill post pics later tonight.
i started off by sanding the wheels down and cleaning with liek 600grit paper and water then threw on the first coat and sanded it again and then a 2nd coat etc..i didn't clear coat it cuz i wanted to keep the flat black look. took about 3-4 hours cuz i was rushin

Painted my rims about a month back. I wet sanded down my stock rims, primed it (2 coats), painted it (2 coats) and clear coated it (3-4 coats). Results weren't bad but the paint I used, Dupli-Colour, which is a flat black, came out in a bit of a blue-tint. I noticed it in direct sunlight but in the dark the rims look great! Here is a couple pictures I took after cleaning it last weekend.
Enjoy!

Enjoy!
Re: any one ever paint there wheels ???
I just got bored of the silver/gunmetal color. Personally I think it was worth it and it was fun doing it at the time, but a fairly long process. I gave it 24 hours after painting to let it settle before putting them back on. But overall, it's a change and I like it. Of course, it didn't come out perfect because it was my first time, just gotta learn from experience. The reason why I say that is because my paint is actually starting to strip off, some rough parts starting to show, but not noticeably unless you look at it close up and rub your hand over it.

I have some RS limited wheels that I had blasted and powdercoated a dark dark grey. They have never been able to balance out correctly ever since and I can't get my center caps on now because the paint is so thick.
