Oil preassure?

I had my oil pan changed today.. I bought a new oil castrol Gtx Full synthetic (I was using pennzoil platinum full synthetic before) I got the car and when i started the car Ihad oil pressure of 25 psi when i was driving under hard acceleration i have 75 to 100 on a D17A1.. The problem I have i was on the highway doing about 100 MPH and whne i got off and sat a light my oil pressure dropped below 25 to 15 at idle. Do I anything to worry about or could it be gauge malfuntioning.

Re: Oil preassure?

only thing i can think of except the mentioned is maybe the rings are goin in one or more chambers?
for you to drop to 4PSI @ idle is just not right, somewhere you have a problem based off of the info provided where reading were apprx same on 2 diff guages. So...Rings, Oil pump, Blockage?

dunno man. good luck

Re: Oil preassure?

It is perfectly natural for oil pressure to drop at idle.

Re: Oil preassure?

Especially after a highway drive the oil is a lil thinner from running at constant speed for a period of time. The oil in these cars is thin as **** as it is, even for as tight of tolerances as our motors have. If its got a lot of miles on it, run some slightly thicker oil if it concerns you.

Re: Oil preassure?

Hey Sir,

I installed an autometer 0-100psig mechanical oil press gauge a few months ago. On the stock 5w-20, I observed gauge deflection approx 1 sec after starter engagement, with an exponential rise to 70psig, dropping down as oil temperature increased to a nominal pressure of 10-12psig at idle. In cold weather, the 5w-20 would give me a 80psig reading after cranking at idle, and nearly maxed out the gauge @ ~2500rpm.
After switching to synthetic 10w-30, all pressures at all rpm's increased, with the exception of nominal hot (180-190F coolant) idle pressure, roughly 10psi, slightly less than before.
On the 10w-30 synthetic and after cranking in cold weather, I try to wait for the pressure needle to completely stop rising before coming off idle. It usually takes about 10-12 sec for the system oil pressure to build up completely.
By the way, I was paranoid about air in an oil system, so I bled the air out of the copper tubing from the engine oil LP condition sender to the gauge; just backed off the brass fitting till a bit of oil came out with the motor running and cranked it back down good. System pressure indication is basically instantaneous after this. Good luck!
