High Octane in civic

gas burns faster under higher pressure. since the vic is a low compression motor, unless you have a tool to manipulate the timing spark to match the high octane burn speed, the detuning is unavoiable with using higher than 87. sure you can slap in a MSD unit and such, but even that won't do crap until you are at the very top end which has to to with M.O.D (motor octane number) which is a representative of high-speed, high-load knock resistance, and even then doing a small this-and-that to use high octane gas won't do shhit to your lap times even with a timing modification.
R.O.D (research octane number) is the spec for low-speed, low-rpm knock resistance, and our cars are specifically developed at honda testing grounds to use the most efficient gas possible for the ROD of our low compression engines. 87 is what'll put the most power to the ground for street driving. track days sure put in 114 octane because you're whipping around the track at full speed on the top end, but for any situ but, use 87
the higher-octane effect of detuning is minimal and won't kill your engine. but you're definitely wasting money.

I think as long as the car is in proper tune, 87 will work fine. maybe your car is running too rich like most factory hondas? btw i do have exhaust and ported tb which may lean it out enough to cancel the stock richness. i would love to see an a/f curve on the dyno if you get a chance. it might answer some questions. maybe even a compression test. believe it or not, i've seen stock d17s have different compression, sometimes +/- 35psi stock!
I may do a compression check and see where the engine is at. But mine DOES indeed run better and smoother on 91 here. This is odd. Like I said before, my last Honda hated super, ran like crap. My Milled 77 Accord ran fine on damn near anything at all. Ran the same no matter what brand or octane I tried in it. I miss it.
i have recently switched to 91 as well. i have noticed a better idle nad a easier smoother powerband. i also pick up a few ectra miles per tank. its really not htat bad considering your paying what and extra $2.50 a tank. i run iridium plugs and have full exhaust and cai. soon after my headwork ill will probably run 100 oct because i will be bumping the CR by milling the head and running stg2 crower cam set up. oh yeah i usually only run chevron or shell. in socal they seem to be the best gas from my experience.

But I have to tell you, I drove a 4 banger volvo sports sedan in Germany on 104 octane. Man, that car ran GOOOOOD!! Especially on the Autobahn.

I Get gas from 76 or Chevron around here. Mostly 76. The station is ALWAYS busy, so there's usually fresh gas. Chevron does not run as smooth in both my cars, and mileage goes down. Octane does not matter. But I use it if the 76 has a long line and I'm in a hurry.

do any of you use fp60 with your 87? it doesn't raise octane but it does kinda make the gas run like higher octane if i explained that right.
