A scanner is not required to read codes on a 1994 Honda Civic. Furthermore, pulling the battery cable doesn't help you diagnose anything. You can locate the check connector under the passenger side kick panel. It's a grey 2 terminal plug near the ecu (wire colours are black with white stripe, the other is red with black stripe.) Jumper the terminals using a piece of wire or a paperclip. Turn the ignition switch to the II position, but do not start the car. You can then count the blinks on the check engine light on the dash. The short blinks add up to form a digit from 1-9, seperated by a pause, then the subsequent digit is read in a similar manner. A long blink are values of 10's which can add up to form 10, 20, 30, etc, before the ones digit is rapidly blinked. You must then find a reference to help you figure out what the code numbers you retrieved mean.
