Prepping a used kit question.
Prepping a used kit question.
Hey, i'm new to the forum, and i'm wondering how to prep a used kit. I've searched for this and couldnt find any specifics about my question. I'm planning on getting a used lip kit, and it is already painted a different color. I need to prep it and get it painted. I want to do the prepping on my own so that i wouldnt have to spend so much money having a shop prepping +painting it. The material is urethane. This kip has some scratches, but would that matter since i'm going to get it repainted anyways? I would also like to know like the full process of prepping the kit (like strength sanding paper, what types of cleaner. and so on.) Any info would be helpful.
Also, would it be okay if i primed the kit myself also? or should i just leave that to the body shop?

1) Sand w/ 200-400 grit paper (preferably 200) sand til paint is completely stripped.
and thats it.
There's nothing to it, don't even think about doing your own primer. Spray can pep boys primer and professional body shop paint don't mix.
and you wont need to clean it, thebody shop is going to clean it before they paint it any way.
and thats it.

im taking classes now for painting. u dont have to take off the old paint, depending on thickness though. if its a really light coat of paint, then u dont have to remove all the paint, jus sand till the the pieces lost its shiny effect. to check paint thickness, use sumthing called a mill-gauge. saves alot of time if u dont have to sand off all the old paint. then jus prime, if u have deep scratches, use sum primer surfacer, has alot more build then regular primer, it'll hide the deep stuff. if u do use the surfacer, u gotta sand that so its even with everything else. maybe sum plastic body filler if the scratches dont go away. but if u do use filler, u will have to use a sealer. protects paint from all prep work u just did, especially filler product. then u are all ready for the paint. lol. not for the inexperienced. let the pros do it, trust me, final product will show who did it.
