oil change question
oil change question
i have an 03 civic coupe and honda recommends changing the synthetic oil every 10k miles. do yall typically do this or do you change it more often and with regular oil?

blah the 3000 mile oil change is just for oil companies to get rich. i think 5000 miles on regular oil and 7500 on synthetic should be fine. If you get worried, just check in and see if it is black and gritty. That is the ultimate test. I mean you could change your oil every 500 miles but that doesn't necessarily make it worth it.
Eh, I do it every 4000, give or take a few hundred extra miles. But even then, my oil is still pretty clean. I don't drive it very hard at all. The manual says 5000, so I'm not too worried anyway. And with synthetic... yeah that'd be nice having an oil change every 7500 miles. I'd be changing it every 2 months, instead of every month like now.
I change my synthetic oil evey 5k miles. According to my father, back in the good old days, most people didn't change their oil until 5k. I think that the 3k time period is just a way for the oil companies to make money. As for changing synthetic every 10k miles, I find that to be a little too much before changing your oil.

well its what the manual says. im sure they wouldnt lie in the manual. and my dad does it, and has been doing it, and had he noticed the oil to be incredibly filthy, he would start to change it sooner.
everytime i say anywhere on this forum that i change it every 10000, i get a bunch of "oh my, i cant believe you wait that long"
I think it gives you guys a sense of "security" to make me seem dumb, because you are all changing it twice as much as it says, therefore spending twice as much money. but until my car bombs out because of the oil not being changed every other time i park the car, it will be changed as the manual states.

yeah teh manual does say as far as i know to change every 500 or 7500 miles and 10,000 for the first. But no I'm not trying to make you feel dumb or anything.I just know that the way that I drive my car that i need the best condition oil in there all the time so it's every 2000-3000 miles or 3 months, but if 10,000 works for you than thats fine, not trying to belittle you or anything.
5k with synth after your third change. That's sooner than you need to, but any knucklehead can keep track of changing the oil on 5k intervals. 3K changes are giving away money. 10k is probably OK with synth, but most of you guys get a woody working on your cars and this is probably the only way you can relieve it on a regular basis.
lol true..there is very little maintenance my cars need...so I always look forward to changing oil, tranny and all that =) if i had money to but more engine parts I would probobly be doing more of that.

ok. i looked in my manual, (2002 manual, if they happen to be different from other 7th gen years), and if u check on page 201, it has a chart that says 10000, 20000, 30000, and so on, and on each block, it says to change the oil. just thought i'd share where i was getting my info from. and if somewhere it says only for the first year, just let me know, because i might not be looking good enough (seriously)
Hmm your manual might be different than mine I have a 2001 but for my car those 10k intervals arent for oil changes, but for car services at the dealership.ill dig my manual out tomorrow and double check =)
lol and I was just reading and import mag a they go a little nuts in saying that race drivers change their oil every race and serious daily drivers change their oil every 1500,to keep it fresh and clean =) I think thats a bit much though

Every 7000 with regular oil. I rotate the tires every oil change as well. Every 30k I flush the coolant (or I will when I get there...Always did on my other cars) 10000 miles is fine if your not hard on your engine and or you do a lot of freeway driving. But tons of stoplights and WOT's should have you changing the oil a bit sooner.
yeah I do WOT at almost every light and My work is less than a mile away so i do 3 or 4 trips of less than 1min driving everyday,so thats why i use royal purple w/synerlec oil and change it often

I go 5000-7000 on synthetic Mobil 1 0W20. That's when it seems to get dirty enough to change.
Every 3000 miles is just making the oil companies richer. And IMO, 10,000 mile changes should only be for cars with a lot of highway miles. Stop and go traffic puts a lot of stress on the engine and would require more frequent changes.

I have an '02 also. That is the recommended interval in the manual for normal conditions (and you live in Louisiana if I recall so you definitely have normal conditions). For people who live anywhere that there is smog or snow, or drive like maniacs, 5000 is the recommended (severe). I do 3000 myself, just out of habit. Wanted to back you up since you said you always get criticized about this
