cam gear install

has anyone done this themselves? if so any tips or pointers would be nice. I am in the middle of this installation and it is proving to be the most difficult one I have done yet. I've got a helms manual and the instructions from aem <---vauge prev gen instructions.
I didn't realize that you have to remove the crank pulley to get the lower timing belt cover off. what a pain in the ***.

uhh you dont have to remove the crank pulley or take the lower timing belot cover off!!! thats crazy.. what I did was take off the valve cover then take off the cover that covered the stock cam gear. Then unbolt the old gear, but the new gear on, and slip the belt back on... its really not that hard, just make sure you have a lot of different sockets and extensions and dont drop any bolts in the engine!

thanks to both of you. IDQ you are the man just saved me some unnececary work.
I just took the valve cover off last nite . I wasn't sure if you could just slip off and on the belt.
I was gonna try before taking off the lower cover and pulley.
thanks again. woo hoo!!

well its a little more than just slipping it on and off, it was easy getting the belt off the stock gear, but you really gotta put some muscle into pulling it back on the new gear, make sure you mark the teeth and the belt so you get it back on properly. You'll see the old gear and new gear have 4 notces around the edge of the gear. I made a mark on the belt and a mark on the old gear, and then made the mark on the new gear in the same spot so everything lines up. You'll see what I mean once you get started... let me know if you need any help....

Hey no problem, glad to help.. what did you set the gear at? I've tried retartding and advancing a couple degrees but cant really tell if its helping of hurting power without getting it dyno tuned....

the car is still in the air. i'm installing some power slot rotors and aem pads .
I plan to try about 2 or 3 degrees retard. to tune for the short runners on the KMS intake manifold. i'm hoping this will make a difference. All i can go by is my g-tech to see.
I'm not taking a trip to the dyno untill I get vafc2.

WHICH gear is everyone running? i dont trust AEM really with the 3 bolt design.. even though ive heard they have a 4-6 bolt re-design coming out.. ive just seen too many of them slip.. and OBX is kinda ghetto.. although it does have 6 bolts... that might still even be better than AEM... this is a VERY important part of the engine.. i dont wanna screw it up with picking wrong part.. if it was ANY other hoindad motor i would say Skunk2 or unorthodox for sure.. toda if they made it.. but we are stuck beetween 2 marginall brands...

aem I think is the only place making gears for the D17. They redesigned recently from allen head bolts to regular bolt due to the fact that people where not torqueing the allens the the required 15lbs. That little L shaped allen wrench just didn't have the leverage nessecary to do it easily...hence alot of slipping cam gears. the new design should fix the problem.
Car is till up in the air brakes are done Just putting in a rear lower tie bar now. I'll bring this thread back with any results.

well I rtarded it 3 degrees and it brought back the top end power that was missing after installing the manifold. I am tempted to dyno tune it but I'm still gonna wait intil I get vafc2.
