Repairs

Do you try to diagnose and fix your car yourself? I have a Honda specialist that I trust and does good work for a good price. I love my car, but I can't imagine doing any necessary repairs myself.

From your posts you sound like you know a lot about cars and enjoy working on them. Do you do any work on other people's Civics?

if you can turn a wrench, and know what your'e replacing, a haynes or chiltons manual is all you need to do anythign to a car... problem solving and diagnosis is where the actual mechanical skill gets involved...

Sometimes it really helps to have the right tools. They are getting so much more specialized. Additionally, cars get harder to work on each year, if only because of engine compartment packing. A GM mouse, for example, had a water pump you could change in 10 minutes, removing only 3 bolts, and loosening a few bolts to pull the 3 or 4 fan belts. Three hose clamps, that's it. I sure do miss those old time cars. But they weren't as reliable as a current Civic.

I must second the recommendation of the Haynes or Chiltons manual. It's nice to have even if you don't do your own work. Dang those photographers are good. I've taken some 'before' photos to help me reassemble modified engines that I have rebuilt and sometimes my photos are hard to figure out.

if you dont have to pull anything off of the cylinder head.... its easier to work on because all the bolts are either parallel to the ground or perpendicular to it.... so everything is rather easy to work on.... also since the trans is behind the engine, it is much easier to work on...
